Calls for a boycott have been circulating for weeks now - to protest the high prices North American consumers are having to pay.

Personally, I think there are much more compelling reasons to boycott the petro-industry.. from environmental degredation, to contribution to greenhouse gas, to fuleing conflict and opression in regions like Iraq, Nigeria, Sudan, Indonesia, etc.

In fact, I think we subsidize North Americans love affair with cars far too much already (fuel taxes do not come close to paying for the taxpayer expense involved in developing the hundreds of thousands of miles of highway and infastructure dedicated to the millions of single occupant SUV driving motorists that clog our roadways evey day.

I am, however in favour of subsidizing commercial trucking, mass transit and carpooling with selectively reduced fuel costs or rebates.

Does anyone else agree that this boycott is entirely self-centred??

Tesla Motors in San Carlos, Ca is taking orders for the Tesla Roadster, an all electric looker that whips from zero to 60 mph in about 4 seconds., zipping around for 250 miles on a single charge, thanks to it amazingly powerful battery system. All this in a curvy body and with sumptuous interior....not frugal.

You can order one of these beauties for just 92,000.

The ecology forum has been removed from yahoo answers which is a major bummer. For those of you in the know, ecology is a science all it's own and to remove it is a great disservice. Please help me by commenting on this post and by submitting a suggestion to yahoo answers, asking them to please reinstate the ecology topic.

If your understanding (or lack of it) of the global warming science leads you to conclude:
a) we are doomed, or
b) we are doomed unless we act quickly
c) we might be doomed, but we have plenty of time to save ourselves
d) we are not doomed, it's all a storm in a teacup
e) we are not doomed and those who say we are will doom us if they get their way.

Which conclusion do you think sums up your attitude?
If you are proved wrong, would you be happy or sad about it?

I'll add my hypothesis about the results when I select a best answer.

I recently bought a new Toyota Aygo. It costs me £35 per year road tax, I get @ 60+ miles per gallon, plus the cheapest insurance group. Inside it is luxurious, roomy and can easily seat four adults, the choice of driving it manually or fully-auto - £7,800 new.

Drive along any road in the western world and there are certainly enough people who have great gas-guzzling monsters, in fact my neighbour just got a Chrysler Crossfire and he is single.

Now whilst I fully accept that not everyone is able to purchase a new vehicle and some people tow caravans or boats and need a larger engine, watch all the mothers in their 4X4 Range Rovers dropping their kids off, or the company executive in his series 7 BMW! These are ego driven fools who have no consideration for the planet or other people.

This is pure ego, a badge that says 'Look at me, sod the planet!' They could easily downgrade to a more practical and sensible driving option, but they are so desperate to maintain an image.

I think it hilarious that government agencies are just getting on the top of economical disaster while scientist have been talking about this for decades. Maybe if they weren't allowing the oil companies to line politicians pockets we would have had more efficient and better energy sources and vehicles done years ago. Before we started to notice a huge change in global warming.

There are many inland areas in the world which are below sea level. Death Valley and the Salton Sea Basin in California are examples. Couldn't a siphoning system be designed which would allow these depressions to fill with sea water if melting polar ice leads to rising sea levels? I don't know if there would be enough available volume in these areas to make a real difference, but this is pretty simple technology and i would think that having new inland seas would be preferable to losing Manhattan, wouldn't it? Another example, the Afar Depression in Ethiopia is hundreds of miles long. If the entire East African Rift Valley can be connected to the Red Sea, it could create a sea almost as large as the Red Sea itself...that would have to help, wouldn't it?

I am trying to build a device which would mount on the rear carrier of my 20 inch folding bike, which would generate and store electricity, for anything, within reason that can be plugged in (i.e lamp, computer, stereo etc).
I bike about 10-15 miles a day and I would like to generate some power and $ave on my elecricity bill (I already have solar panels) and create some green power.
So I want to create, in essence, a kinetically generated charger to mount on my bike, which, when I get home, I can plug appliances into.
If such a product already exists where can I get it. If I need to make it from scratch what is my first step?

Of course looking for those ways that will lower the most carbon the fastest first but also looking for low hanging fruit that can help the environment a companies bottom line and the economy as well as those ways that don't make money but cost much less then doing nothing from the harm they are doing now and will do in the future.

So I know that probably not very many scientists use Yahoo! Answers, but if any of you do, can you tell me what you think about global warming? I have heard so many different arguments from both sides, and I am now very confused. I tend to lean toward the opinion that it is real, because of some comments on the opposition that I fundamentally disagree with, like that DDT should be allowed... So, educated people who know what you're talking about, what do you think?
