Fuel for transportation contributes 14% of all our greenhouse gas emissions and 19% of our carbon dioxide emissions. Of this road traffic is the biggest single contributor. The 19% can be approximately broken down as cars 7%, other road transport 7%, aeroplanes 4%, trains, ships and other transport 1%.
On top of this there's the industrial contribution arising from the manufacture of the vehicles in the first place, the electricity needed to power the factories and so on. There's no specific figures but I would estimate that the overall total contribution that transportation makes is just under a fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions (probably between 17 and 19%).
I don't have figures for factories per se but all industrial processes together contribute 17% of all greenhouse gas emissions and 21% of the carbon dioxide emissions. Forest fires and the burning of other biomass contribute 5% of all greenhouse gases and 4% of the carbon dioxide.
The biggest polluter of all is power generation, this produces just over a fifth (21%) of all greenhouse gas emissions and nearly a third (30%) of all carbon dioxide emissions.

I think you're a caring person, who probably means well. But this issue is not what you think it is. 30 years ago, we were making "irreparable" holes in the ozone layer with flourocarbons (hairspray, deodorants). Mount Pinatubo did more damage in one eruption than mankind has in it's whole history. And guess what? The hole created by that eruption is gone.
30 years ago, we were cutting down the rain forests at a rate that would completely deplete them in 25-30 years. Guess what? They're still there, and we're still cutting them down. Oh, and "experts" are still giving us the "30 year" figure.
According to "experts", our current man-induced warming trend will make sea levels rise approximately 6 inches per year. By the way - they started saying that 4 years ago. Have you seen a 24 inch rise in mean sea level? Of course not. Someone owes me a huge amount of sea water.
Mars is currently experiencing global warming, too. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure humans don't have a very large carbon footprint there. How can we possibly blame the current US government for that? (by the way - I'm sure someone will think of a way)
Global warming is a naturally occurring, cyclical event. Yes, pollution is a problem, but it is not related to or causing global warming. Equating the two issues is just another way for people with nothing substantive to say to still try to tell you what to do.
Here's a good test to see if there's any merit to an issue like this: Who's making money on the issue? Always follow the money. In this case, politicians get to pass more laws that will raise taxes and create fines for offending companies. Never, in the history of our country, has increased regulation, tax or tarrif created any long-term good. Blindly stating that "government should do..." or "government should provide..." is just another way of saying that you're willing to pay higher taxes for programs that absolutely cannot work.
All of the statements I've made in this post are easily verifiable through a variety of reputable sources. Whenever you have a question about these things, it's easy to take the time to do some research and cut through the smoke and mirrors.

Moisture in the atmosphere is the #1 contributor to global warming. All burning fossile fuels emit moisture, in the form of hydrocarbons.
Pollution from industry can be in the form of byproducts. If you like using an ipod, TV or any sort of electrical device, you are part of the problem. All products manufactured use energy in the production, and leave behind some sort of waste.
If you want to know more about Global Warming just go to Wickipedia dot com and type in Global Warming.

Transportation contributes a great share to global warming. It generates 60% Carbon-dioxide into the atmosphere
Factories, forest fire generate 40% of carbon-dioxide into the atmosphere.

Ya, CO2 naturally released into the atmosphere by the system of life on earth and nature is tremendously more than the next hundred years of vehicle transportation affects. There is NO NO NO science to global warming. Global warming was a scare theory introduced in the mid to late 80's by an agenda driven group. Real scientists doing real scientific research with no agenda other than pure scientific research disagree with the whole premise of global warming. If you are really interested in the science of global warming I suggest you read some of the scientific literature (papers) on the following web site created by scientists doing real scientific research in the field. http://www.lavoisier.com.au/ Buying into global warming creates controls with costs attached to them. You will pay more for emissions testing, taxes, costs carried over to the consumer by companies forced to abide by the unfounded policies and a number of other incidental fees. Money is the true agenda of globalizing global warming.

I don't know about transportation in particular, but I heard a very interesting fact about electric power consumption:
The main factor in the deterioration of the atmosphere is CO2, which doesn't directly CAUSE the global warming, but ACCELERATES it dramatically.
When you use, say, a 100 watts light bulb, generating the power to light up that bulb emits 100 grams of CO2 every hour. Yes, it means: 1 gram per watt per hour.
In other words, YES, we should rethink the way we use petrol powered transportation, but we should also review the amount of electric power we consume, all day, every day.
Finally, I'd like to give something to think about to the IDIOT who said that cars emit mostly water vapor:
An standard sized car produces an average of 4000 KG (YES! 4 TONS!!!) of CO2, every year.
RECTIFICATION: Sorry CrashBurn: I had misread your comment about cars. However, global warming is NOT A MYTH, and we all need to look at how we can reduce our emissions. And if you don't believe the oceans will rise, take a look at the frozen mass of Greenland: It has diminished by 40% in the last 20 years! Where do you think that water will go?..
SCOTT P : I suppose you love it too when "stupid people" call YOU a MORON, or don't you?..
Reading your other answers makes me want to PUKE. YOU think you're the best thing, YOU think the whole world is STUPID and most of all, YOU think YOU've got all the answers!
If you are such a gift to humanity, why are you "wasting your time" on this site instead of trying to put your "knowledge" to GOOD USE??
We (the STUPID PEOPLE) are on this site to try and exchange ideas to make things change, so that our children, and THEIR CHILDREN, can enjoy this planet for everything it has to offer. Unfortunatly, people like you keep their heads in the sand by predending there is "NO PROBLEM BECAUSE IT'S ALL ONE BIG CONSPIRACY". But if others believe in your IGNORANCE, children will have NO FUTURE.
(Why don't you click "ACCEPT E-MAILS" so that I can give you a piece of my "stupid" mind in private?..)
13/05: Ok, SCOTT P., ok. You are right, only YOU are right and the rest of the world is just a bunch of clowns! You’re just TOO GOOD! So good in fact that I think we should all chip in to have a statue made in your honor. What material would you like it to be sculpted in? Stone? Bronze? Personally I think hot air suits you best.
Anyway, this is where I sign off, as I really don’t think my stupid, dip-****, hypocritical little mind could handle another encounter with your undeniably immense intellectual superiority.
Have a nice life! (Then again…don’t.)

We need to move away from fossil fuels--that is a huge problem environmentally, economically, and foreign dependency. We also need to look and study global warming free of politics and economics. What is the cause? What is the solution? Is there global warming? It is becoming a multi billion dollar industry.
Al Gore's facts are not correct. In his film (from which he made a small fortune) he said that temperature increases are proportionate with, and result from, an increase in co2. Actually, scientists say that a rise in temperature causes a rise in co2 not the other way around.

Try and be easy on JLB there Mr.Scot P. He's is enraptured in Al Gore's hysteria...poor thing most likely wakes up in the middle of the night worried sick over Al Gore's doom and gloom vapidity. You are of course correct your statements are on solid thermodynamic ground. Anthropogenic Warming (A.W.) is not established to the extent many think. A consensus is not a substitute for a proven event. The probabilistic modeling used to predict climate changes are scenarios and only as good as the parameters & defined variables in the model. Case in point: The Sun, pro A.W. camp claims to have accounted for Sun's effect by measuring Radiant Output. They totally exclude on these models, the strength of the Sun's Magnetic Field which impacts on the ability of cosmic rays interacting with the Earth's atmosphere & the resulting generation of clouds in the atmosphere. It's tragic that JLB is so throughly bamboozled. I bet when he saw those immages of select parts of the the U.S. underwater he went over the edge. Too bad no one was there to whisper that there is only a 10% chance that will happen in the next 250 years and that's if you accept the bogus premise in the first place...
To paraphrase Churchill: 'Never have so many, been asked by so few, to do so much, for so little'

No but I know it is nothing compared to the percentage of global warming is caused by transportation of light by the sun and transportation of molten lava from the core of the earth.
