Tesla Motors in San Carlos, Ca is taking orders for the Tesla Roadster, an all electric looker that whips from zero to 60 mph in about 4 seconds., zipping around for 250 miles on a single charge, thanks to it amazingly powerful battery system. All this in a curvy body and with sumptuous interior....not frugal.

You can order one of these beauties for just 92,000.

Just remember that Tesla died a penniless, embittered old man. Just what is the point of getting an electric car when you don't consider the energy costs of all the other things you mention. For instance those batteries you nearly mention; they are extremelyly expensive in terms of energy. The motor, metal frame, plastic resin, production energy costs. The whole enchilada. You are making the mistake most people do
when talking alternative energy schemes. It is easy to only look at the energy used (or produced) and forget the enourmous energy that is spent in getting the machine and operatiing it.
The dollar cost--forget it. Dollars are just convenient markers for oil. We aren't on a gold standard any more. We've been on an oil standard for years. And fossil carbon is running.

The concept behind electric cars is noble, however the reality is sadly flawed. Where do you get the electricity to run the car from?

Fossil fuelled power plants in the majority of cases unfortunately. The only way these cars will become viable is if the electricity used is generated from renewable sources.

No, and neither has the lovely cashier at the convenient
store. You know the one. They sell Exxon, Amaco.

The Tarheel State will be one of the last ones to climb
to see that beautiful summit.

Looking at the boulevard today, its pretty evident why.
