I'm presenting a 60-minute session entitled "Teaching Hispanic Cultures through the Eyes of Sandra Cisneros" with a Spanish professor of mine at the Foreign Language Association of NC's conference.

If you were a teacher of Spanish--choose your level--what would you hope to leave such a session with?

Would you want activities to accompany individual stories? Discussion topics for reading The House on Mango Street? What kind of additional materials would you want to go along with such a topic?

This is one area in my teaching that I have never felt complete conviction one way or the other. I teach 3rd grade, and my policy last year was that students MUST correct work below a C for a higher grade. Students who had a C or above could correct their work if they wanted to for a higher grade. I found that when students were given the choice to NOT correct that they just didn't do it. How do the rest of you elementary teachers do it? I'm toying with the idea of not allowing corrections so that students must try their hardest the 1st time around- but that seems a bit contradictory to teaching since students are supposed to master skills. What do you think?

Tomorrow is the first day of school for my high school students. I plan on placing them in aplhabetical order. Should I do this as they come into class? If so how? Or should I have them sit, introduce myself, and then do alphabetical order? I need something that will be the most organized.

Thanks!

discipline/classroom mangement problem? If you thought about quitting, but worked it out somehow, what did you do differently to keep your classes under control? I taught for 3 years and gave up because of the constant interruptions/discipline problems and lack of support from administration/parents.

I am pursuing a degree in Health Education. My goal is to become a Health/Sex Ed teacher in a Jr. High School. If you are a teacher who teaches this combined subject, did you study the sexual topic within your "Health" studies/classes? Or did you have to take a class like Human Sexuality as an elective?

I am in the process of registering for classes and I can't get ahold of the advisor for the Health Edu. program. I can easily add Human Sexuality to my schedule, but I have no idea if it will be taught along the subject of "health". What was your experience?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If a student asked you for a letter of recommendation via email, if you don't feel that you can give them one, isn't it better to tell the student that rather than to just not respond back? I am certain he received the email, he just chose to ignore it.
