This statement means that back in history certain tasks weren't considered jobs, they were more like daily chores that had to be done all the time. As times have changed we now hire for jobs that people used to do on their own. For instance today we employ people to do jobs such as farming and landscaping whereas back in the day these were jobs that the individual at the home used to complete as a way of life (daily chore)

This statement has been used by a WORKAHOLIC!Back then(not sure how far back then was)work was all there was.there was no playtime,it was work,work,work.That is where the quote"All work and no play makes for a very dull day".

Hmm. Interesting answers so far. I like them all. Makes me wonder about the person who asked the question. Is the questioner someone who got that quotation as part of a response (from her parents) when she asked them whether they got paid for cleaning their room when they were kids?

it means that teachers actually cared more about the students learning, then summer vacation. my how times have changed.
