Less than 1% of American college students study abroad. Why do you think this is? When they do decide to study abroad, why do you think it is normally in Western Europe (Spain, France, Italy, UK, Germany, etc.) Any thoughts?

The local Rotary club in my district is sponsoring one student to go abroad for a year, and i would only have to pay for my airplane tickets. I have done some recearch on the program and it looks like a wonderful experience, but i would have to miss my juinor year in high school and everything else that is happening during that time. I would love to experience something like that and learn so many new things but im scared i will miss out on my time in high school. They are only picking one person from our school to go and as far as i know only 4 people have applied and I think that i am the most likely to be picked-but i am still having some reservations.

I am a Navy veteran and have just recently got my associate's degree in Computer Science. I am also learning French. I just started my first quarter at a University and am working on my bachelor's degree.

I am a white guy (I only say this because I know that scholarships do discriminate). I was wondering if there is any chance for me to study abroad in France or a French-speaking nation (like Quebec). I'm not necessarily wanting some place to pay for my life while I'm there, but even if there is some sort of foreign internship program where I can study and work.

I mainly want to do this because it is the only way I will ever become fluent in French. If you know somewhere I can go to find more information about this or someone I can talk to, please let me know.

Also, FYI, there is no study abroad opportunities for French-speaking countries offered at my University.
