Special Education

[Selected]: All categories Education & Reference Special Education

The testing found a large discrepancy between his intelligance level and his actual reading and comprehension level. He now qualifies for special education, but I am not sure that is the best thing. It seems he will be plunked in a room full of kids at all different levels of learning. He was making strides last year (1st grade) with a reading teacher and has fallen backward since them. We have hired that reading teacher to tutor him and she feels the reason for the step backward is because what she has taught him is not being carried over into the classroom. I feel like actually placing him in special education class is not the answer. We are willing to do anything on our end as parents to help. Do we have any other options? We live in Michigan. Thanks in advance.

My student adores pine cones and he likes to squeeze the pine cones in his hand but when they get soft he tears them up and makes a mess. Does anyone know where I can get fake pinecones which are hard?

My son is in the 8th grae in public schools in Texas. He suffers with dyslexia. The school is telling me that he has to pass the exact same TAKS test as all the toher kids and if he does not pass he will be help back. I am outraged! he cant not spell, strugles with reading and math. To me it is like taking pro atheltes and special olymic people and making them comepete. Does anyone know the laws or how to find out his rights?

I currently have a petition to the prime minister on the government website to re-instate special needs schools so that children with learning difficulties can have a better education.

I would appreciate everyones support by signing this petition.

Lets give kids with special needs the opportunity of a better education.

i work in a special needs classroom and we have a old greenhouse attached to the back of our room. it has sat unused for several years. i had my class clean it out but unfortunatly it's in pretty bad disrepair. we want to use it and have plant sales to raise money for our classroom, but do not have the money or supplies to have it functional. do you think there are companies that would donate gardening supplies to special needs children?

Yes I am posting this question 2 times. I am posting in 2 different catergories in hopes that it will help me find what I am looking for!

Howdy all. I am looking for a paricular type of software that will allow be to utilize a checkout system for equipment. I want to be able to generate UPC codes and have users scan the UPC to check out the equipment. The equiptment ranges from software to actuall physical equipment. (I work in Assistive Technology for my school district so there is various things I would like to inventory this way)
I have searched google and all I am coming up with is stuff for libraries to use to checkout books and they do not look like I could coordinate it to use with various types of items. I am also seeing alot of stuff that is utilized in sales that have prices, point of sale options and ect and I dont need all that. If anyone has any ideas to get me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

Here's the deal...

She is very intelligent and scored as high or higher than other kids her age but she's developmentally delayed and she has a SEVERE speech/language impairment... no one knows why.

The last district we were in had enrolled her in a special all day communication disorders class. The new school district we are in is fighting me on everything (they don't have a "special" CD class yet - but will next year). They don't even want to provide transportation.

I have met with them three times already (we've only been here 2 months) and they are re-evaluating her on everything. I still have a MAJOR issue with the transportation thing since she can't tell anyone who she is or where she lives, there are 20 kids at her busstop from k-8 and when they crowd up to the bus in the morning, I'm afraid thy're going to hurt her! (she's only 35lbs) They're trying to tell me her speech doesn't mean she can't take the bus but I know the law.

What would you do?

This has been going on for a while, he is now 6 and it seems to be getting worse. He excels in school, will not ride bus b/c he says it freaks him out (actualy he is afraid the bus driver will forget him, he will get on the wrong bus or the driver will not get him home) so I have to pick him up everyday. Told me yesterday that his legs vibrate when he put on his pants, day before he told me that his feet vibrated when he put on his socks. He has to have certain socks too. He cannot touch the elastic band on his underware (especially red bands) b/c he says it makes his hands cramp ro shake. Sometimes when we are driving I hear him stiffing over and over and over, I ask if hes okay and he says he does it b/c his body is not letting him get enough air? I am not sure if these are anxiety, panic disorders, slight autism, I have even been reading alot about Sensory Integration Disorder. Has anyone out there dealt with any of these type of issues. I would love some suggestions here.

So I got accepted to SDSU and I start in the Fall, but I have no idea what to major in. I am pretty sure I want to work with autistic children. I already looked into becoming an occupational therapist, but that requires taking physiology...and science is far from my best subect. I absolutely despise it. I guess I could manage, I'm just looking for something else. I also considered becoming a special education teacher, but I want more options. Can anyone help?

If it helps you, I am looking for more direct contact with them, rather than like a lawyer defending their rights or something along those lines.

Any suggestions are appreciated. :]
