Yes I am posting this question 2 times. I am posting in 2 different catergories in hopes that it will help me find what I am looking for!

Howdy all. I am looking for a paricular type of software that will allow be to utilize a checkout system for equipment. I want to be able to generate UPC codes and have users scan the UPC to check out the equipment. The equiptment ranges from software to actuall physical equipment. (I work in Assistive Technology for my school district so there is various things I would like to inventory this way)
I have searched google and all I am coming up with is stuff for libraries to use to checkout books and they do not look like I could coordinate it to use with various types of items. I am also seeing alot of stuff that is utilized in sales that have prices, point of sale options and ect and I dont need all that. If anyone has any ideas to get me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

First of all, how much are you willing to spend? If your on a budget you won't find anything cheap or free that will meet your requirements. Most inventory software have other features included. You might not use them, but there standard as a package. You may use Microsoft Excel to do your simple task as to track inventory check in and out. Make a template with your requirement information such as names, ID's, Date, Item, etc. I'm sure you or someone can implement this Excel. This would be cheap, but not convenient.
Check out RedBeam software Link below

Also, if you see something that you like, go to the software's webpage. Sometimes they have free trials that you may test out until you find the right one for your situation. Plus, you don't have to spend a dime to later decide it's not for you.

If you don't see free trials, call them up or talk to customer service.

Good Luck

I would also look in two other directions:
1. Why not make it a project for the students? There are a lot of computer nerds out there that are merely waiting to be discovered.
2. Try contacting a local software company. They could use it as a deductible donation or subsidy... to lower their taxes and also help you. It's not much of a software anyway...
3. My opinion is that barcodes are not too good. I suppose you're going to print them on labels and stick them to the items... They'll wear out quickly or if applied on an actual item (chair, table, cupboard, etc.) will deteriorate before u know it. I would suggest (depending on allotted money) to use RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) or something similar. This would also enable to avoid missappropriation of items by having an RFID scanner at school exit. This also can be obtained through donations or "grants".
Hope I was usefull.
Good luck!

Our Assistive Technology department uses high-quality inventory labels with numbers on them. They have a barcode on them, but we are not using it.

What we have is an online spreadsheet that we use to type in the inventory number, item description, school, staff member, and student (if applicable).

Sure, we could scan the label but that would only put the number in the system. Someone would still have to type what the item is, where it is going, who is responsible for it, and what student it is used with. So, we have decided to just keep it on the spreadsheet.

At least the spreadsheet is online, so it can be accessed from any computer in our district, if you have proper permissions.

Let me know if you come up with anything better!
