There are others receiving ssi with just a speech delay? I make 30 grand a year with 3 children. I was told autism is a disability. Why cant I get help. I heard I need to hire an attorney.

No matter how disabled your son is, he may not be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) if your family's income and resources exceed eligibility limits. If your family's only souce of income is your salary of $30,000/year ($2,500/month), your son is probably financially eligible for SSI. I you as a single parent have or receive any of the following, it can affect his eligibility:

Child Support
Alimony
Property you don't live on
More than one vehicle
More than $2,000 in liquid assets (including retirement accounts, stocks, bonds, savings, cash)

If you don't have any of these resources, or if they are not significant, yes. Appeal the decision and contact an attorney. They will no charge if you don't win. Ask the experienced folks at the following Yahoo! Group for referrals and advice:

If he has a parent or grandparent on Social Security retirement or disability benefits or if they are deceased, he may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) which does not have all those income and resource restrictions.

Good luck!
