The best way for him to increase his vocabulary is to read. Read, read, read and read. Also, invest in a good dictionary and notebook. When he comes across words he doesn't understand, ask him to write those words down in the notebook and look up the meaning in the dictionary.
You could also buy vocabulary books like Barron's "1100 words". Get him to practice those everyday.
Good luck!

Making him read more and write out ten words a day as a previous answer recommends are good but sometimes difficult to enforce. If I were you, I'd sit down together with the young man everyday and read with him a newspaper/magazine article or a few pages in a book and have him write down a few new words each day (3 or 4 at the most) as well as reviewing the words from the previous day and learning to use them in sentences.
It'll take your effort as well as his but it works better than just giving him assignments without tutoring him yourself. Your effort will pay off handsomely. You'll see his vocabulary improve in a matter of days.... Good luck!

I think reading is the best way of enhancing an individual's vocabulary. Find your son some interesting books/ novels and make sure that he reads at least for thirty minutes before going to bed.

particular, that is common. My first became into an insanely early and sturdy speaker. My 2d only became 2 and jointly as she additionally has a super vocabulary, she nevertheless speaks those extensive, long sentences and massive long thoughts the place no one is conscious what she is saying aside from her! and on occasion, her sister. that is uncanny, yet her 4 300 and sixty 5 days old sister can only approximately continually comprehend her. only save chatting with him and being a sturdy vocabulary type.

Increase your own vocabulary and use it "on" him! When he asks what the heck you're talking about, tell him! Of course, it would've helped if you had done this from the time he was born. But, better late than never they say!

Have him read more. The more he reads the better his vocabulary is. Have him write down 10 random words from the dictionary and their meanings, then have him use them in a sentance.

you should not want to make him he must want to increase his vocabulary himself. Why not just encourage him a little not a lot he's at that age where he could freeze up and not wanting to learn nothing be very careful with him.

Give him Brussel Sprouts or Broccoli until he learns to ask for things with good, big, wonderful words.
Test him daily. Give him a word. Until he learns to use it in a sentence correctly give him Spinach to eat, not Oreos!
Make him watch PBS or Discovery on TV instead of what he wants until he can master vocabulary!
It WILL work!

brow beat him. Just kidding. Seriously, do you want to motivate him, or just make him do it?
Try this line on him and see if it works.
Girls dont like MEN who only have a 20 word vocabulary. Girls talk, they like men who know HOW to.
If you're gonna make him do it, then give him a list of words and make him use one each day correctly in a sentence. You'll notice alot of resentment but pretty soon if you stick with it, it will help.
