I heard this question asked on the radio once and thought it was a stupid question.

Yes, I know that "as we speak, (something happens)" means it is happening in real time. When was it first used? Does it have something to do with early telegraph or radio transmission when people first became aware of "live" broadcast?

Is it better to try a cigarette at a younger age, than an older age? I mean, adults like cigarettes more, right? My Dad said I would think they are NASTY and I just want to try 1. He said I can take a whif, and that I wouldnt even get through a whole 1. But will I become addicted? What do cigarettes taste like? Is it really THAT hard to quit?

I used to say it a lot as a child, but I'm not really sure who taught it to me or where they even got it from and I'm really curious to know the history behind it.

I was wondering about what possible conocations can be drawn from the phrase "if and when" or "when and if" as contrasted with a weaker phrase such as "if it happens that..." I found an author (at the link below) who preferred "if it happens that..." but I found this phrase to be unsuitable for my emotional writing style. For one thing, the phrase, "if it happens that..." seems to imply that you don't really care whether something takes place or not.

I would appreciate it if some writers gave me feed back on their thoughts, and how they like to use this phrase in a sentence.

Hello i'm 16 and going into my junior year and i'm in big trouble. I messed up really bad my first 2 years. I mean really bad. I flunked almost every class last year and 3 classes my fist year. But now I wish I haven't. I'm so worried about my future. What options do I have left. By that I mean If i buckle down and get straight A's would I be able to get into a good University. And what if I don't can I still get a good job. Like atleast over 50k a year. And what kind of jobs can you get if you get a GED or are homeschooled. (My mom suggested I get my GED or Homeschooled or continue in Highschool. Which option is better if i'm willing to try my hardest. Please help, I'm worried i'll be a failure.

Today, she pretty much compared attending lessons online to job corps. She didn't finish high school (she dropped out her senior year) and she thinks I'm making the same mistake.

She makes up symbols (like Japanese or Chinese) and attaches phonetic sounds to each one. then correlate it to an alphabetical character. She has done this several different times for her own enjoyment.
So my question is what kind of career needs skills like these? She is very creative, and good at math.
Thanks!!

Is it just me or do people have a bad habit of mispelling words and not using proper grammar? I see a lot of grammatical errors nowadays as well as people using "there" instead of "their" and vice versa. This is mostly among the young adult, teen-age populaton.

Is the education system on English and grammar failing our kids or are they just not paying attention? The elementary school I attended back in the 80s and 90s was unfailingly strict with the English language, going so far as to requiring students (2nd through 8th grades) to complete homework assignments known as "dictation" (students had to write different sentences over and over again). I admit that this helped me shape my grammatical usage as well as the grasp of the English language. Schools should implement this to help kids improve their language skills.

Still, I have a low tolerance for people who cannot write English properly, with the exception of those with learning disabilities.

Any thoughts?
