My English teacher constantly says to avoid "to be" verbs as much as possible, but I'm not sure exactly what he is talking about. Examples?

I will be babysitting a 1 year old soon. I can't decide how much to charge. I will be watching her for 11.5 hours every week and sometimes 19.5 hours because she works an extra day sometimes. I wanted to either charge hourly or give a set amount for every week with an additional amount for the extra eight hours. What would be a good price?

Also, we live in the Kansas City area and it is $185/week for 45 hours in a daycare.

I am a teacher and am attending a workshop tomorrow. I need an example of an assessment for the class. I am having a hard time deciding. Can you throw out some assessments ideas? I teach foreign language and besides testing there are speaking assessments, written, etc. Any interesting ideas?
Thanks!

I failed to go into detail - the child puts everything and I mean everything in her mouth. We have tried the teething ring around her wrist, her mother has visited both the dentist and her pediatriacian - to no avail - she has even been found peeling paint off of the walls, trying to eat it - the little girl is very verbal, and developmentally on the right track, however, in my 10 years in this business, I have never encountered someone who is so very oral - your criticisms were acknowledged, however, I do not believe one can always look at a situation as "black and white". We had a child psychologist visit the school to observe her - she was speechless! So, if there is anyone out there who might have the "magic trick" to solve this problem, bring it on.....!

I can find lots of stuff on how media distort messages, but not on how audience members contribute to the process of media message distortion.

Yesterday I had an interesting conversation at work with a customer who commented on my nametag. :) He said that the way people pronounce my name is often (though of course not always) connected to what part of the U.S. they're from. I didn't realize that.

I won't tell you -- yet -- how I myself pronounce "Shari". I want to see what you all say.

So, FIRST please tell me if you'd say it as "Sherry" (like the fortified wine) or "Shahree" (with the stress on the "Shah" syllable). And SECOND, please tell me what state you live in. If you're not American, that's cool too. In that case, just say what country and/or region you're from. Thanks all!

This isn't a question...just a puzzle. Capital letters and spacing have been deliberately left out so they don't give away the answer. Just wondering if anyone has seen it before. Can you make the following words make sense ONLY by inserting punctuation and changing the proper letters to capitals? You cannot change or move any words. Just insert punctuation and capitalize where needed (optional, but not required, is to change spacing where needed). The FIRST right answer will get 10 points.

that that is is that that is not is not is not that it it is
