Essentially, the same issue as a tree falling in the woods - the answer is dependent on one's concept of reality. If objective, reality exists "out there", independent of perceiver, then unsmelled crap still stinks. If subjective, reality only exists to the extent it is perceived, then unsmelled crap does not stink.

Yes it does stink even though there is no one around to smell it and say that it does, because everyone knows **** stinks. We have all
smelled it, it has been implanted into are brains to recognize
and remember what the smell is like when you think of it.

no, something can only stink/smell if there is a lifeform around that can smell it, otherwise its just molecules floating around without anything sensitive enough to pick up the bad odor.
