To avoid future hearing loss, I know that we should only listen to iPod at 50% of the volume at most when using earphones (and only up to 45 minutes per day).
If you live in a city, it's very difficult to follow this guideline. I find that at half volume, I can barely hear the music if I'm walking on the street, riding the bus or taking the subway (when I'm most likely in the mood for listening to iPod). There is so much noise in the city that my iPod is virtually useless when I follow the safety guidline.
Even on a Sunday night, somehow, there is still enough noise outside to make the listening experience less than perfect.
