Software - June 2007

I need a new Hard Drive, so I need a new operating system. I was planing on Ubuntu because it's free. Could all my exsting applications run on it like Windows Media Player? And when you donload something thats for windows could Ubuntu run it?Is it like window's functionally or mac's limited software runability? So the next time I download, should I pick the Windows version or the Mac version( Theres usually never a Linux option)?

The picture is still visable through the letters. Is there a way to remove the text and restore the image?

I always used to be able to open all sorts of image files (JPEG, JPG, BITMAP....etc) which are saved on my desktop using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. However a week ago I dicovered that i cannot do this anymore and i can only open them using MS-Paint which doesnt have slideshow capability.
The strange thing is all other image files saved anywhere else other than the desktop open easily with Windows Picture and Fax viewer!! does anyone have an explanation? solution?

I'm trying to install windows XP on my computer, but it won't boot from the CD. The CD is a bootable CD and my BIOS settings r setup to boot from CD-Rom first. I've done this befroe on this PC, why is it not allowing me to do it now?

Got a Acer Travelmate C110. I recently bought Vista and made a clean install on my laptop due to language incompatibility issues that did now allow me to made an update so to keep my old files. I succesfully installed vista but now i cant activate my WLAN because the button i used is not responding. Anyone knows a way to activate the wlan by another way? or how to make the button work once again? please need help because i cant acces to the internet in that computer

I'm very enticed by by the entire free-software movement, and I find myself heavily sympathising with it, and wanting to escape from the web of funding monopolies such as Windows and Mac, but I admissibly know incredibly little about it. there are two basic functions that I need a computer to serve - use of IM services, like AIM is my chief concern, along with other things such as web browsing, because my computer is mostly recreational. Also, can it be used for word processing? Is it compatible with MS-Word? Any advice on these questions, or any other tips, concerns, advice, or encouragement on my GNU-transfer would be greatly appreciated. :D

Let's say I buy one of those three license anti-virus programs that are licensed for three separate puters. I install 2 this week and the third in a month when that license on that anti-virus expires.Is it allowed, will I get my full year on the third computer?

When i refresh a webpage or basically do anything right now it seems like its loading twice. Like it will say Waiting on yahoo answers the bar will fill up green. then start over again. Or if i click a stream vid. It will buff twice. What could cause this.

I borrowerd a CD from my friend and foung out that there are more song than I thought. For example, if I burn a CD from iTunes, it only fit around 30 songs, but my friend has like 100-200 songs. What is the program that he use? Also, where can I download it for free?

Ok i was loading a pc game on to my desk top (medal of honor picific assault)and all was going good untill i put in the 4th final disk then my desktop froze and then final went to the hp blue screen . Ive all ready tryed restarting it and also reinstalling windows xp and still i couldnt get any thing up beside that blue screen. I dont have the cash to get some one else to fix it ,so i would be greatful for any help i could get
