One of the major disadvantages is that you don't get some very vital updates which are available only to original versions. Pirated CD's sometimes also expose you to malicious software which gets installed along with the software u r installing.

Another issue is the ethical issue which is that if u purchase a pirated cd and not an original one, you deprive a programmer who has worked real hard behind that software of his profit. It's equivalent to stealing someone's hard earned money.

Yes, hefty fines, prison time and my personal favourite: malware.

There are free open source versions of most popular commercial software, so "Pirating" doesn't make any sense to me.

Examples include Windows vs Kubuntu, M$-Office vs Open Office, PhotoShop vs GimpShop, WinZIP vs IZArc, Norton vs AVG Free, etc., all free.

Feel free to post here and ask for the free equivalent of ANY "insert name here" commercial application.

- it's against the law
- no support
- if you do not HAVE the disk, you won't have the program any more if you have to replace your hard drive or suffer some other crash.

Good luck and Happy Computing!
