It just allows you to get bits and pieces of a program from other computers, so, technically it supposed to make your download faster. But, after you download you need to stay connected to share what you got. It only transfers Torrent Files from your computer. The more you share the faster your downloads become, A "Leech" is a person who gets and then not share, so, their downloads come slow.

So, yes they lose profits and it is illegal in some areas. Depends on a few legal issues as to being legal or illegal.

well just to correct a few things from people who no nothing but choose to comment. Torrents are not illegal the files they point to are if they are copyrighted. There are lots of places on the net using torrents to distribute the software music now as it is a fast way of saring there files. sites usually do not hold any torrent files and are usually just a search engine just like google that plucks the results from the internet and hen the link is clicked on it links you to the tracker where the torrent is downloaded this can even be done in google so that makes them as illegal as say torrentspy. it is not illegal to download copyrighted stuff in all countries so get your facts right. like in canada as i have read it is illegal to upload but not to download. i think this stands in the UK aswell where it is only illegal to upload copyrighted content but i am not 100% certain. the MPAA and The RIAA also use illegal tactics to get peoples information which is illegal but as always the USA think the own the world they go after everybody with which the best response which i stand by comes from the pirate bay in sweden and basically tells them where to go.

If you download copyrighted stuff using torrents, you are most likely to be sued.. so in your interest, I'd request you not to do so.. However, torrents are also used for distributing free softwares like certain linux distros.. you can download the same via torrents.. "Torrent is a content distribution protocol that enables efficient software distribution and peer-to-peer sharing"

A torrent itself is a list of trackers. You load the torrent into a BitTorrent Client, and it connects you to those trackers. Multipule people (hopefully) are connected to the trackers. You download from people, and upload to others. That's called P2P or Peer to Peer, since people are downloading and uploading to other people, instead of from a central server. The companies do loose profits, which is why it's illegal.
