Software - August 2006

I currently have Windows 2000 on my computer I would really like to update it to XP. I'm not some kind of computer genius, but I know I need to know if I was to install XP would it erase all of my programs and other things i have saved in My Documents if I was to switch it? Also how do i find out if my computer can support XP without opening the computer?

I would appreciate anfy comments you might have regarding this subject.

I have lot of software, media on CD's like audio and video and i worry about this software and media form being lost its like my treasure so what is the best way to make back up for these CD's with high compression? because i have lot and limit number of blank DVD.

Is it illegal or is there a way to do that isnt illegal? if they sell it to someone for $50 is that wrong? or they have to have permission from the company to do so.

In Firefox, there is an option to set file types to programs so that instead of saving a file, you can Open it from it's current location. However, I'm unable to do this with .exe files. My only option with them is to save them to disk and then run them.

Where would I change it so that I can open .exe files from their location instead of saving them first.

On the second or third screen after i turn the computer on, i get an error that says: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\syste... ". It will not go past that screen. I tried putting in a disk to clear the harddrive, but nothing happened. I have also tried putting a an XP disk, but same thing. The OS that is currently on there is XP Pro. How to i go about fixing this? I didn't delete the file, i am actually trying to fix it for someone else (and they don't know what happened to it). Or could the hard drive have gone out of it? Anything will help.
