Taken from the Greek alphabet (alpha, beta etc), Alpha versions of software are the versions that are tested by the developers themselves. The next stage, Beta, is the version that is released, usually only to a select few, to test the softwares usage in the public domain. There are usually a number of variants of the Beta software as bugs become apparent and solutions are found for them. The final fully tested software is often called the Master or Gold Master version. I have been a Beta tester for AOL's software since v5.0 and have had very few problems with each new generation that I have tested.

In software development, there is actually an Alpha level of software development. That is (of course) not as refined as Beta. Why the Beta is what (nearly final), I don't know. We just have always called it beta. For me, Beta is Greek for "don't load it on your computer yet"! :)

' beta' as stated is the second letter and mean's prototype- it is the first test and there in order to refine and iron out wrinkles to introduce a better 'Alpha' system. So it is infact a test run for a follow on more perfected system.x

Greek alphabet. Customers never see Alpha versions, but is anybody's guess why they call all early releases Beta. Final releases are never called Gamma. Software manufacturers are too impatient to wait until the software is done.
