I currently have Windows 2000 on my computer I would really like to update it to XP. I'm not some kind of computer genius, but I know I need to know if I was to install XP would it erase all of my programs and other things i have saved in My Documents if I was to switch it? Also how do i find out if my computer can support XP without opening the computer?

I would appreciate anfy comments you might have regarding this subject.

Thanks

Yes you can upgrade to XP ( I would recommend Pro over Home but that's your decision to make) and it will not erase your data unless you do a fresh install instead of an upgrade.

Check the link below for requirements.

first you have your-self, does the computer have more than 128MB of memory, second, does the computer have more than 10gb capacity of hard disk and is the computer pentium 3 or 2.
if you answer yes to above questions, then Windows XP can support to your computer.

Once you upgrade, all the documents were not lost or switch.
recommanded you to save all the documents into other drive or hard disk. And then fortmat the computer and then install the Windows XP, because some of the program that you use in Windows 2000 might not support Windows XP. so the best thing to do is to re-format the computer first, and then install the new fresh windows (operating system)

Good Luck!!!!!!!!

If I were looking to upgrade I'd first go to the Microsoft website and find the system requirements for that particular program/system. No changing your operating system will not necessairily remove your current software. During the install process it will ask if you want to keep certain programs but this usually applies to programs that have been unused for a long time or is so old as to not to be fully compatible with the new system. Before it removes anything you will be given an opportunity to save it.

Dear fellow member,

2 things:
1) Run the Windows XP UPGRADE mode or edition.
2) Check Microsoft.com for windows XP HAL (Hardware compatibility list) or you can run the HAL check during Windows XP initial setup from WITHIN windows 2000 GUI (Graphical user interface) mode.

Kind Regards,
Ben

Yes it will erase most likely everything. Right click on my computer and go to properties and right there at the bottom you can see your processor speed and other things.
As long as you have atleast 1 ghz of speed with 256 or 512 memory you shuold be ok.
But again todays programs require more memory and higher speed cpu.........

You would only be updating the program not you info or records. You don't need to be a computer geek to know this. I am not trying to offend you.

If your PC supports W2000, it will run XP. The requirements are the same.
