i would like to restrict the use to only be able to change the cells intented for updating. can anyone tell me how to do this

Highlight all the cells, right click, and "Protect" them. Then they can't be changed unless they are first "Unprotected".

Another way would be to right click the page tab and protect the whole page, then unprotect the cells you want to allow updating for.

By default all cells are locked in Excel. But this lock does not come into play until you protect the work sheet (Tools --- Protection --- Protect Sheet)

What you need to do is unlock the cells you want to give access to (Format --- Cells --- Protection)

After unlocking the accessible cells, protect the worksheet. Password is optional.

Select the cell. Click Window menu and choose freeze.
