well thats a broad question unless any technichal specifications are their......on the other hand , if try to answer the question without any details....i would suggest either or combination of these are the culprits:
1. slow processor
2. lesser ram as coompared to work you try to do on ur comp(get extra RAM)
3. heavy antivirus running like norton, mcafee, etc(if so try installing AVG free version)
4. bad sectors on hard disk(many cases can arise so contact ur vendor) or highly fragmented hard disk(try defragmenting the disk using windows in built defragmentor, it would be better if you can download a defragmentor software...there are alot on www.download.com)
5. have not formatted ur system for ages..(its better o format atleast ur Os partition time to time)

(Now comes the reasons that are destructive:)
6. viruses have taken over ur system( so most of the ram is eaten by'em.solution: try formatting whole of the system)
7. trojans,adwares,spywares,etc...(solution: try formatting whole of the system)

and their could be many more reasons i could point out but may not help you unless you specify details.....(how can a doctor cure a patient if patient does not specify the details)

First you need to define the computer, what is it? processor, memory, etc.

Secondly what is SLOW? Is it slow going to websites, opening files on the local hard drive? What is the reason you consider it slow.

And what is your reference? The same computer a month ago? Or a friends computer that is faster?

Without knowing more about the system and what you are trying to do, it is hard to gauge the cause/fix of the problem.

It could be the computer, It could be software or hardware,it could be your internet connection, it could be the site your going to on the internet, or it just could be your perception that it is slow.

You need to put more detail into this question to get a good useable answer for it. All the things suggested are good, but without knowing more information most of them probably wont help out at all.

Throw it out the window. The higher up you are, the faster it will go! ;)
But on a bit more serious note: see what programs are running in the background. Make sure your computer isn't infected with a virus or trojan. Make sure the virusscanner isn't constantly scanning everything.
Scan the harddrive for errors. Defrag the harddrive. Make sure the swap file is large enough, if possible place it on a harddisk different from the drive where Windows is installed.
Make sure there's enough RAM memory in your computer. If you're running WindowsXP, 512 Mb nowadays is no excessive luxury.

shall i tell u people a very good reason why computers become slow. you may not notice it but u have too many things on your computer. delete all ur unnecessary files, clear the recycle bin. make sure all programmes are running, make sure u are logging off properly each time. and patience is the word i hate saying to you computer slow-downers. u have to WAIT WAIT WAIT for things to settle up on computers. if u use internet, wait for web pages to load, if u are starting up ur computer, let the desktop come up fully, and if u are running big programes, don't run any others. all theseslow ur computer if u do not follow. don't blame ur computer by any means. its the problem with its users,.

There can be Diff reasons like
- Computer Overloaded - this happens when you install lots of applications and games in your pc

- Viruses/spywares/adwares are mostly responsible For slowing down Pc you need to scan your Pc once <<< you need to Focus on This Point.

- your system confriguation may also be cause of Slow running...... check your System confriguation go to Run and Type Dxdiag (and press Enter Key)

Virus and/or spyware - go to cnet.com and look for free programs called Spybot and Adaware. Install them and run them weekly to clean your computer.

Computer slowness can also be caused by not having enough RAM or having a ton of programs installed in windows. Also defrag your hard drive and clean out unessessary files on your hard drive. You might need professional help to do this.

First of all, check the programs that are running. There may be programs running and you don't even know what are they doing. Close them and don't let them start at computer startup (in "msconfig", uncheck the checkboxes next to them).
Now scan your computer with an antivirus and an antispy program, to make sure you don't have any viruses or spyware running. This should solve your problem.

Lots of things, could be spyware, adware, viruses, spam, I reccomend getting a good anti-virus software. AVG is a good one, and SpyBot Search And Destroy is good. If your running windows XP go to disk cleanup, that could be bogging down your hard drive casuing it to be slow getting data. hope that helps
