I had the belt replaced that makes the alternator work about 2 months ago (Haven't driven it 500 miles). I was driving home from a convention yesterday and it broke- it was shredded- there was nothing there!!! Car was over heating, battery light on, the whole nine yards. Anyway- got the belt replaced and she's driving like a dream again. My question- How long do those belts last to begin with? and Should I go back to the folks who replaced it last time and give them an ear full? My husband has full intentions of doing that- but I want to make sure it's the right thing to do.

I have a friend who is a retired truck driver, he wants to buy a unit and own privately - a scania - and use it to travel around the country and maybe even abroad. Where would he go for insurance? And what other factors are there to consider. Any help would be much appreciated - thanks in advance.

I live in Germany and I can use either the American gas which has an octane rating of 5 points less than what the Germans say it is. So premium gas on a military post says it has an octane rating of 90 while the same grade gas at the german pump says the octane rating is 95. Which number should I trust? My car's recommended gas is 95 octane! I am confused. I know both countries use different methods to calculate the octane ratings but I really want to get the most out of my 2.0T engine. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

i saw an RV pulling a jeep. i was wondering, does this put miles on the jeep, even in neutral? my understanding is that if the wheels turn, the odometer is reading it... so? anyone?

I saw a horse truck today which had tiny windows at the top, presumably for ventilation purposes and I wondered why they don't let the horses have windows to look out of.

I suppose not wanting to startle the horses is the obvious answer but it's not as if they are not used to traveling fast! I think it would be quite nice to see their little faces looking out of the window.

What do you think?

Watched people using the parking bays set for disabled drivers when they are clearly not disabled. these bays are set aside so people that need extra space can use them, let the supermarkets check if there is a card and if not clamp the lazy scum and fine them.

I know it's possible to run Diesel cars on vegetable oil but there are two things I need to know before I do this.

1) I think I need to add something to the oil before putting it into the car (but I don't know what it is that needs to be added)

2) In the UK it's illegal to do this without paying the tax man. How do you make the relevant excise payments?

(please - this is a proper question can the "two point gamers" NOT answer this question - thanks)

It irks me when people leave an engine idling and take a snooze in the car with a window open with the A/C running. If no one is in the car I don't hesitate to turn off the engine...Were it possible to stop an idling engine without creating carbnon monoxide fumes or hazard I would. Can sticking something in the tailpipe cause the engine to stall without causing harm to a dumb/environmentally irresponsible occupant inside. Or is there sometime type of EMP (electro magnetic pulse) device that can stop a idling car engine that is just polluting at a parking lot or at the street level just below my apartment.

Is it because of the stereotype that all hitch hikers are murderers, rapists, etc? Are people really that stupid that they assume that that's the case with all people who hitch hike?

I was just wondering in our modern world of mobile phones if Truckers still used CB's or if they have been shunned in favour of blue tooth head sets.
