I have a friend who is a retired truck driver, he wants to buy a unit and own privately - a scania - and use it to travel around the country and maybe even abroad. Where would he go for insurance? And what other factors are there to consider. Any help would be much appreciated - thanks in advance.

If he is planning to use it for work purposes then there is alot of different insurances to consider ( goods in transit, public liability). but if it is just for driving for pleasure then he will probably have to just insure it for road use, but so that he can in no way use it for business use he might have to take the fifth wheel off so that he cant connect to a trailer.

Try contacting Kerwin Smith & co LTD insurance brookers they have alway been cheapest for me. Phone- 0870 787 8887.

there are plenty of hgv insurance companyies on the internet. depending on what time of the day he intends to drive he may need things like london lorry disc. i dont think he will need an operaters liscence unless he will use the vehicle for reward. and last thing get a volvo instead much better.

ask your insurance company... if hes got the licence, and is in good health, and he can cope with 8mpg, maybe 10 because hes empty... then theres no one going to stop him...

its madness of course, but hey, were all growed up. tell him to stick to 7.5 tonnes, at least they can do 75-80mph.. or buy a winnebago, everyone is dumping them because you need a class 2 to drive them. theres bargains to be had... look on eBay

Not sure about the insurance, but he will definitely need an Operator's Licence (O-Licence). You need to have this licence for any premises which has vehicles over 3.5T max permissible weight operating ffrom it.

Get it registered in Luxemburg, save a fortune on the road tax.
