I'll just go with the flow and say put the heavier things toward the front, but try and distribute the weight evenly.

I've done this plenty of times.

Put the heaviest stuff in first.

And, while the couch may be the heaviest single item, other things can weigh more when grouped together. For example, several boxes of books can weight more than the couch.

Overall, you want more weight toward the front than toward the back. That way, the truck will be more stable on the road and less likely to fishtail.

A friend tried the idea of putting all the heaviest stuff in first. Tongue weight forced the front of her Blazer up, making the steering very sloppy. She lost control and totaled her Blazer when it left the road and flipped. I was always told to put the heaviest stuff closer to the center of the trailer and pack the lighter stuff around it. After you load, check the angle of the trailer relative to the street. A SLIGHT forward tilt is best, but all the weight in the front is bad news.

Heaviest goes in first. Well, first you can stuff the area above the cab with light things. Then get the sofa in place just behind the cab area. If you don't have a lot of other heavy items or enough stuff to lock the contents in position, then use a rope or strap to tie the soda in place. You don't want it sliding around as you drive to your new home.

Drive carefully,

The heaviest things are suppose to go in first and be pushed all the way back.

Ask the U-haul folks- they usually have suggested packing diagrams for the various units.

This is from their website: "Load your trailer with at least 60% of the cargo weight in the front half of the trailer closest to your car."

The couch definitely needs to go in first.
