Is it because of the stereotype that all hitch hikers are murderers, rapists, etc? Are people really that stupid that they assume that that's the case with all people who hitch hike?

I realize that there are bad people out there, but why not let people make their own decision? After all, like the first guy said, there are a good deal of them who are decent people in unfortunate situations who need a helping hand.

that is how people view it, hitch hikers are actually really nice people who need a deep favour

I live in Washington, here we have had a couple of serial killers that hitchhiked so it is banned, I didn't know it was national thing I've hitchhiked in a few of the western states when I was younger and there were no signs up prohibiting it like there are in Washington.

It is only illegal on interstates and highways. It is for the same reason you can't just walk on the interstate. It poses a hazard if people stop to pick someone up.

If they can't afford a car to get around, then they should stay home and stop trying to bum a ride from someone.

There are to many instances of people being killed and otherwise abused. It is for safety, a necessary precaution.

because the world is full of freaks of nature that want to chop us up into tiny little chewable pieces and hitchhiking is just waving fresh meat in front of freaky faces!!
