I live in Germany and I can use either the American gas which has an octane rating of 5 points less than what the Germans say it is. So premium gas on a military post says it has an octane rating of 90 while the same grade gas at the german pump says the octane rating is 95. Which number should I trust? My car's recommended gas is 95 octane! I am confused. I know both countries use different methods to calculate the octane ratings but I really want to get the most out of my 2.0T engine. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

The manufacturer's fuel recommendation is based on the gasoline available where the car is sold, so the German premium gas should meet your car's requirements precisely. I'm not sure what the suitability of the post's fuel is, but premium gas in the US is usually 92, so that 90 octane stuff may not be the best.

In Europe the ratio of Heptane to ISO octane is the method of determining the octane rating of a fuel.I drive an Audi with a compression ratio of 10/1and it will run at autobahn speeds on 95 octane.I would therfore go wih the German rating Regards Mick.

You said your car's recommended gas is 95 octane. Is it an American car that you brought over, or a car that you bought there?

If American, use the American octane standards.

If it's a car you purchased while in Europe, go ahead with their ratings.

Hope that helps!
