This is very perplexing...I don't understand why American auto companies and their workers would be against this. It seems if their vehicles got more miles per gallon, people would be more inclined to buy their cars.

Everyone I know buys foreign cars for the better gas mileage...so why wouldn't the American companies and workers want to be more competitive?

If anyone can explain this, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you could cite your sources, that would be great as a friend is writing a paper on this. Thanks a lot.

People who have speed bumps on their street please answer what they like or dislike about them?
Have they done good or bad to your property value? (not opinion but actual)
Is it far noisier with speed bumps?
Has it slowed traffic a lot?
Any other comment about them?

When they are NOT the cure for the planet? You don't need a tank just to go to the store for geroceries. You don't have 8 children, and you ARE waisting valuable resorces for the future of the children on this planet!!!

Do you take public transportation to work? If your area had a good mass transit system, would you take it to work rather than driving?

People complain about drivers hogging the middle lane of the motorway and I agree, they are a nuisance.I find, however that the ones staying in the outside lane are much worse. At least you have the option of overtaking the pootlers in the middle lane but in the UK it is illegal to undertake (why?)..so you ,and a snake of drivers behind you are held up by a bloody minded
so and so who will neither speed up or move over.
If he/she doesn't like driving quickly, fair enough..STAY IN THE INSIDE LANE.

I am almost 30 years old and have been avoiding the freeway for about 2001. I used to drive 30 minutes to work one-way on a very busy freeway. I did that for almost 2 years. Then all the sudden I started to get nervous. That would pass and then come again like a week later. Before I knew it I was literally sweating and realized I was having a panic attack. I continued to drive on the freeway and the panic attacks would come and go. I'd be able to drive down to a certain part of the freeway but when it started to curve I got nervous and would stop right in the fast lane and put on my hazards an pray that nobody hit me from behind. A couple of months later I was taking backroads everywhere, and today that is the case. I've tried to get on the freeway and go one exit but I get nervous. I now realize that it's a mental thing because I am scared to drive down certain streets (if it looks like a highway). If the car curves I get nervous. It takes me all day to get ...

I live in a small town and whenever I call a taxi, they always stop and pick up other passengers on the way, making the total in the car sometimes 6, 7 to 8. One time an infant was placed in the middle of the front seat with no restraint and the cabbie said nothing. Tonight we went 20 miles out of our way, to the next town, to pick up someone else before they dropped us off. All the time charging each one fare for the trip. We are always squeezed in the backseat sharing the cab but not the fare. Is this illegal for the cab to be double faring or sometimes triple faring? Something just doesn't seem right about this whole thing. I thought when you called for a taxi, it would be up to us to make the decision of whether we stopped to get other passengers.... or at least the cab driver would ask us if we minded... but it's mandatory in this town. Tonight we were even told that we couldn't put our bags, (from Wal-Mart) in the backseat because he was stopping to get other passengers.??? HELP!

Haha, just for the record I actually tried to find this on a Yahoo Answers search.

Anyways, I'm a new-ish driver, w/ a used car that I just started driving....few weeks. Well the first full tank went out in like a week, but I was mashing it quite a lot; my brother told me that wastes gas so I don't anymore.

Now it's at half, (Suzuki grand vitara 2003) and I've only gotten like 91 miles off of half a tank, supposedly my tank holds 16.9 gallons, so thats only about 10-11 mpg

Websites say I shold be getting 19 city, is 11 too little even considering A. I mash it ever now and then, and B. my city has TONS of huge hills?

Anyways, are there any tips that would increase my mpg? I hear if you switch into neutral while coasting you'll save, even on an automatic (which I have) is that true?

Any other tips like that one?

I use buses almost every day of the week to get around and buy their weekly tickets. However I think the prices are ridiculous ! and the buses are often dirty or messy. And then if you don't get a seat you have to stand and do the drivers pay attention to the 'MAX STANDING' rule ? NO! often you are squashed together like sardines.

And then once I was standing near the front of a bus and got off for a few seconds to let some poor person get off the bus with her pram who was getting rushed by the driver - when I went to go back ok he driver made a disgusting face and said to me 'think your getting on the bus free?' and I said politely that I just got off to let the person with the pram off but yet he held up the bus while i got out my ticket (which gives me unlimited free travel on that bus) and he then examined it and gave it back saying 'ok'.

seriously sorry about the rant but what are your views on Public transport ? buses etc ?

I bought a new one in August 06 and it gives me 11.25 on petrol and 13.25 on gas. My earlier second hand '96 model Maruti Omni (petrol) used to give me 13-14 litres. Owners of older Omnis seem to be getting better mileage from what I've been able to see on the net; owners of new models seem to be getting mileage in the same range as me. I'm a little puzzled as to why this should be so with a new MPFI engine.

When you are driving a car, are you conscious of a point of the compass (East, West, North, South)?

I am a beginner driver in US. When I approach an intersection or interchange of highway, I am always at a loss which point of the compass is my direction.

Do ordinary American drivers understand "I am going to East"? I am just understand "I am going to New York".
