Over drive is like having another gear, it drops the engine speed for better fuel economy, relaxed driving at higher speed and less engine wear.

The ratio of the transmission. Drive is 1:1 and overdrive is more like .89:1. This means that the input shaft only turns a little over 7/8ths of a revolution while the output shaft makes one whole revolution. So you go further on less engine rpm's and you save gas.

Overdrive is simply a higher gear ratio than drive so that you can keep the engine speed low. Better gas mileage that way.
