When they are NOT the cure for the planet? You don't need a tank just to go to the store for geroceries. You don't have 8 children, and you ARE waisting valuable resorces for the future of the children on this planet!!!

I don't .I drive a Buick Roadmaster station wagon w/ a detuned LT-1 in it . So I don't have gas mileage issues either. The Buick gets 25 mpg at 75 mph and unlike riceburners it is cheap to own and cheap to repair I have 193K on it looking for 300K
My beef w/ SUV has nothing to do w/ their ability to inhale resources.
I think that SUV's should be illegal because basically they are death machines.
Anybody that has spent a lot of time driving particularly on the 3 dimensional roads of the West has seen far too many SUV accidents and SUV's on the side of the road that have assumed the turtle position.
I can almost guarantee that if I see a vehicle along the road in a turtle position it's an SUV. Does anybody not agree with that statement ?
The problem of course is that in order to sell them to women and guys that work in offices they have to make them as much like a car as possible.
The poor bastards are lulled into the illusion that they are in fact driving a car. Then when they try to do the classic accident avoiding maneauver of snap left , wait a second pass the vehicle/object and then snap right and get back into your lane ,the reality hit's them :" I am driving a truck with a lot of mass and a very high center of gravity
Oh "s**t!!"
Blow outs create the same situation as does entering a decreasing radius exit with too much velocity . Oops
So you will bring more people to your point of view if you embrace the human safety point of view rather than pontificating about the environment .
I just did. ha ha ha

I drive a late 80s Bronco....it guzzles gas, I only use it for camping or off roading.....

We usually camp once a year and offroad the same amount.

The only other use is when I have to tow my sports car somewhere or when i run to home depot for supplies.

Less than 3k miles per year.

Also keep in mind that the EPA mileage ratings are subjective and go down the crapper once more people are in the car (more power is needed to pull more weight)...so the end effect, the SUV will not impact mileage better than a hybrid or a more fuel efficient car.

It is rare to see a high passenger SUV carrying its full capacity of people....98% of the time it is one person....

Yes I do recycle, yes Solar energy is there, I have motion sensors in my home that turn lights off no more than a minute after no motion is detected. Flourescent lights are all over. All of my appliances are energy efficient, the house is new and has the spray on insulation....

Yes I have lawns and have set the sprinkler to the bare minimum and it is still green.....i have a push type mower...

Usually it is the defensive SUV owners that are the ones who drive them alone....with no passengers...

I hate people who think they know what they are talking about! If your little car gets 60 MPG and only seats two people (like the Honda Insight) you are "effecting" 120MPG per vehicle. If your SUV (like the Chevy Suburban) gets 15 MPG and seats 9 people you are "effecting" 135 MPG per vehicle . Can you imagine all the extra cars that would be on the already crowded roads if there were no high passenger SUVs? Furthermore, the SUV is the most practical vehicle on the road...or off, being able to go thru snow, transport people, dogs, groceries (spelled correctly), lumber and tow whatever you have. Plus most are safer than little cars.If I had a little econobox I'd have to have a second vehicle for hauling the dogs and all the errands I run. How economical or "green" would THAT be? People pick on SUV's and their owners when the biggest sources of wasting valuable, natural ,reources are their HOMES! Do you have solar? Do you have a windmill? Do you have more than 400 square feet of living space per person in your home? Do you have grass that needs to be mowed, watered, fertilized or a synthetic lawn? Do you eat meat and add to the waste of land for grazing and methane problem from cow farts? Do you recycle 95% of EVERYTHING you use? If you will buy me a good gas mileage car and insure it, I WILL drive it, but I'll STILL need my SUV 85% of the time! PS- How much electricity did you waste writing your stupid question?!?!?!?

I am too fat to fit in a small economy car!

I am old !

I don't drive more than 10 miles a day !

I have arthritis in my knees & can't get in or out of a small economy car!

I love to shop & can't fit much in the little economy cars.

I often buy large items ! (try to get a 27" tv box in a mid size car)

I have no children !

& the valuable resources will last my lifetime.

BUT>>>>>>>

I drive the most fuel efficient SUV (& the greenest) on the planet!
{So do Al Gore & Bill Clinton by the way}

But who are you to think you can ream out every SUV driver?
Some people NEED an SUV.

I just sold 3 New Expeditions last week & every one of those customers needed that size & style of vehicle.

Not everybody can fit their families in a Prius!
Nor can they fit a weeks worth of groceries for a family of 6 in the trunk of an Aveo.
And when sombody makes a fuel efficient vehicle that can tow 5000 lbs, fit a family of six & all their needs...... I'm sure I can sell it

Quit-yer-btchin!

I don't drive an SUV, I drive a 4x4 pickup. Alone.

Why? Because I'd have a heck of a time hauling anything substantial on my motorcycle (or getting around on the bike in the winter for that matter).

Gas is a commodity, and as long as you don't rob anybody to pay for it you can buy and use as much gasoline as you can afford.

If this "valuable resource" is drying up, the free market will compensate accordingly, and it will balance out in the end.

That is simply snobbery on your part. Many people need SUVs. I for one work in the mountains and have to go off road.

It is not the type of vehicle but the unnecessary engine size you should be worrying about.

Have you considered what would happen if you got your way? People who need the vehicle using one with a much smaller engine and putting it under extreme stress would actually put out far more emissions?

Do try and drop the class bigotry and start living in the real world.

i dont drive an SUV

but i know people who do and need to tow stuff, carry stuff securely, carry people often.

some decisions are not about the planet. if you have ever used a styrofoam cup you are being hypocritical of SUV drivers. they are just as bad for the plant.

Blah Blah Blah, stop painting everyone that drives a certain type of vehicle with the same paint brush.
You know the saying, "don't judge a book by it's cover"?
Have a nice day.

Quit worrying about everyone else and just get on with your life.

When you get done reading this you can call Al Gore, ask him how much electricty he wasted this month, then sing ***-by-ya and go outside and hug a tree

GET A LIFE

I tow a large horse trailer every several weeks. In order to tow you must have a large vehicle.
