Buying & Selling - January 2007

I am on a budget of around $7000 for a used car. This is my first car and next year I am going to college. I know most of you are going to say, the car is going to get beat up alot because its at a school parking lot and all that BS, but the truth to the matter is that I am going to have an apartment and not a dorm. My apt. has a garage and I can walk to school. I just want it to get home on the weekend and holidays. I also want a nice car, not a old piece of ****. Sorry for my French.

I know nothing about buying a car so I'm having trouble understanding this. Car loans are for people that can't afford to buy a car right away? They get the loan from their bank? So if a car cost $8,000 and you get the loan to buy it, you would have to pay the bank monthly until you reach 8,000? or do you have to pay more? How much would you have to pay? Is it better to buy a car right away or pay with loans? Sorry if I sound stupid but I really don't know anything. Can someone explain the process? I'll give best answer.

Being that i'm not getting much help at home i thought i'd ask here! Anyone that could answer all or even one question off this list would be a great help to me. What should I ask over the phone? What papers should I get once I bought it? What should I have in order before I buy? What should I ask for from the seller? Is there anything I should do before I buy besides get it checked by a mechanic? I need some real help here >.< any tips would be great . Thx people!

I have a car that was run dry of oil and I put a private add up selling it and was very upfront about the condidion. Its running now, but from what my mechanic says, its risky to take it out on the highway. AsI said, I disclosed all of this as I don't want to be the type fo guy that sells a lemon.

I have someone who agreed to pay me in cash for the car who wants to pick it up and drive it home which entails about 20 miles of highway driving. I told him repeatedly that it might not make it but he assures me that it won't be a problem.

What I want to avoid is having this guy break down on the way home after selling him the car and somehow come back trying to sue me or get his money back since I have been upfront from the beginning.

Can I avoid this by simply having him sign something stating that he is fully aware that I have said the engine might not be in good enough shape to drive?

What would you recommend?

My hubby said his boss just bought his wife a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer at an auction. It was a repo and only has 27,000 miles on it. His boss bought it for 11,000 cash. My hubby and his boss work for NE Auto Auction so they know all about cars and all that jazz. Obviously it was a great deal. The only thing is she doesnt want it b/c she wants a Tahoe.
