Oh my goodness... where do I start?!?

First off, know exactly what you are looking for and DO NOT get talked into settling for something that you do not want. Do a ton of research on the internet regarding the car you want, so that you can be an 'expert' on that particular car when you go to look at one. Know the value of the make/model that you want before you go and view one. It might take a while to find the perfect vehicle for you so be patient.

Have your financing in place BEFORE you go to look at any car. DO NOT buy the car the first time you go and look at it and DO NOT go and look at the car alone. When you and your friend go and see a car, take your time and look it up and down inside and out, take it for a drive on the surface streets and highway. Write down the VIN number (located on the dash, on the drivers side of the car right where the dash and windshield meet) and take it with you. Do not show excitement about the car, just tell the seller that it is alright and you will still be looking. Do not give out your personal information, instead tell the seller that you will get back to them if you are interested.

You will need the VIN number off the car to get a CARFAX at www.carfax.com which will tell you the history of the vehicle. This is a MUST do. Sometimes the dealer/seller will offer to show you the CARFAX report; don't use their report, get your own.

Never settle for the asking price... ALWAYS negotiate and ask for less. Have the car inspected by a mechanic that you trust.

The most important thing you can do to help yourself is to realize that the seller is NOT your friend and is not trying to help you. You have to help yourself because the seller only wants to sell the car to make $$$ and does not care to who.

Does this help?? These are the basics... the more you shop around at different dealerships the more you will learn about the different tactics that car salesmen will use on you. If you just think of it as a big strategy game you can have fun with the process and take all of the stress out. Good luck!

Definately have the car checked out by your mechanic, then offer less money from the seller, go low the seller usually will offer a little higher price then what you offer, never pay the asking price. Once a price has been settled on, and your mechanic checks the car out, and it passes, then pay with a cashiers check, which you get from the bank, do not pay in cash, the cashiers check is your proof of payment. Then the seller will give you the signed car title, and a bill of sale. Call your Auto Insurance Company and get the car insured, I like 21st Century Insurance company, they even include Roadside service in the price of auto insurance and their rates are low. You take your paper work to the Dept. of Motor Vehicles with you auto insurance information, and apply for a license plate and registration. Some states require you to have a Emissions test done, does your? If so before getting the license plates take the car to the Emission testing site give them your paper work and they will test the car for you, there is no charge for this, and takes only a few minutes to do. Best time to go is at 2:30 pm when most parents are picking their kids up from school. After you getting your plates, put them on the car, it is easy to do. Keep the registration and your insurance card in the car, if you get stoped by a officer they will ask you for them and your drivers license. Keep the car title in a secure place, you will need the title when you sell the car. Best Wishes and Happy First Time Car Buying!

ive sold approximately 700 autos in my 6 yrs. if you really want a good deal DO NOT BUY THE FIRST TIME YOU GO. i cant answer all yer questions, but i will tell you that if you shop several dealerships until you find the salesman(not the car) you like, your experience will go better!! and always take it to your mechanic
