She does not make enough to pay taxes, after we are married her income will become taxed. married filing seperate gives no real relief, but if we are only married before god and not to the state we would be able to both file as head of household, this would give us a huge tax benefit of $6500. Together we have two kids in college and one in high school, we cannot afford to be legally married.

I worked for a guy that told me I was going to be pd. under the table. At the end of the year he hit me with a 1099. I owe the IRS over $6,000!!! I am a young single parent and I workmy butt off to make ends meet and now I am in total debt. This will take me years to pay. I already live pay check to pay check. What can I do? I am already on a payment plan but is there any way they can lower the amount I owe?

Currently, I am paid by the hour, lets say $10/hour. If I work 80 hours, the total is $800, before tax and deduction, which includes federal tax, Medicare, social sec tax (No state tax in Florida).
For example: 800 – 80 (fed) – 8 (med) – 48 (social) = take home of $664

Now, lets say I was offer $10/hour as a 1099. How would the numbers work out?

Would my take home be $800 and pay the same amount ($136) of tax at the end of year? Is this correct? Did I miss any thing?

ok...heres the deal...my mom filed me as a dependent on her 2006 tax return. i only lived with her from jan 1 to may 6 of 2006, i paid her rent, and paid her for gas. i also moved out of the state on 7 may and got married on 30 june. i sent a letter in to the IRS refuting her claim...does anyone know what kind of chance i have that the IRS will rule in my favor and let my husband claim me instead of her since i was his dependent longer than hers?

serious answers only please.

I went to my tax guy this year and he never asked about my property tax. I am owing this year. Is there any *other* way that property tax can be deducted. He never asked me for how much I paid so I don't see how it could have been deducted.

We cashed out some stock options in 2004 and just found out in January that there was a problem. Apparently the financial company that managed the stock options is supposed to report the full price (not the smaller amount we received) to the IRS. We had a portion kept out from the amount given to us. We thought this covered the taxes. We didn't know about any additional forms - didn't receive any 1099 or anything. Now we're trying to figure out what we need to do. The IRS just said that we need to pay the full amount they're saying and then 10 - 12 weeks later they will go over the amended return and give us money back. They're saying we owe almost $30k and we believe it to be closer to $12k. A tax guy told us to do an amended return and another form (Sched D maybe?) and send it in to them. In the meantime, I don't want them to levy or garnish wages! I feel like we've gotten so much conflicting information - my head is spinning!!

Any ideas? Suggestions? Past experience?

I made about 23000. before taxes and my husband made about 20,000 before taxes. We paid in about 4500.00 to the federal government over the year through our paychecks. Turbo tax says that we will only get 1000 back. Is that how much it should be? I thought we should get close to all of it back.
