The reasoning would be the dividends would be taxed at 15%, while it would also count towards the mandatory withdrawls from an IRA account. The whole point would be to avoid having the dividends be paid into the IRA account and then be taxed at a higher rate if it is withdrawn later as part of the mandatory withdrawls.

I have just started my own business and have received notification that I have a Federal Tax Lien filed against me for my person taxes. Is my business considered property or an asset that the IRS can attach to satisfy the lien? My business is an LLC.

Example of expenses might be medical expenses, gas charges, rent payments, phone bills, purchases, etc....etc.

As of last year, a student could deduct up to $4000 from their total income on line 34 of the Adjusted Gross Income section of the 1040, but I don't see that possibility this year. Line 34 is something different and I don't spot the "tuition and fees deduction" hidden anywhere else. What makes it confusing is that I still received a "Form 1098-T" from my university that lists the amount I spent on tuition this past year. Did they remove that deduction possibility, or am I just being unobservant? Thanks.

I sold some stocks this past year and received a "Form 1099-B". I understand that I am supposed to fill out a Schedule D using this information, but I don't understand what I list in columns (d) and (e) in order to determine column (f)--the Gain or Loss. In column (d) do I list the total proceeds I received from the stock sale (as is listed in 'box 2" on my 1099-B)? And I have no idea what to put in column (e)--the "Cost or other Basis". Thanks for any information you can pass along.

For this year's credit on the Federal Excise Tax, I'm still unclear on the following types of calling, which are basically all prepaid:

1. A prepaid/pay-as-you-go cell phone plan? This is the most unclear. The service includes long-distance, of course.
2. A prepaid long distance calling card? I read someplace that the retailer paid the Federal Excise Tax, so the consumer is not entitled to a credit.
3. Skype-out calls? I really doubt it, but does anyone know for certain?

As an artist, I'm often asked to donate a one of my paintings for fund raising events to non-profit organizations. My tax preparer said I can only claim the actual cost of materials as a tax deduction, and the labor or fair maket value is irrelvant. Is this true?

For example, for my medical travelling necessities I do not have all my gas receipts but I can determine from my online bank statements which of the items are my gas purchases.

Any good online resources for total tax dummies (idiots) that tells you what documents are acceptable and what documents are not would be greatly appreciated.

PLEASE ONLY RESPOND IF YOU ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THIS SUBJECT. Thank YOU!

my husband, who i am separated from but not legally divorced as of yet, claimed both kids on his taxes this year. we usually had no problem deciding who got to claim them. i let him claim both last year so his liability was reduced. now i will have to pay over 3 grand because he claimed them both. i asked him to refile without them, but he refuses. i am unable to work due to cancer, and can't afford a lawyer or much else for that matter to fight this. i searched online and irs but can't find anything about proving who had custody. all i have is notes about who has them when (he takes the kids every saturday and to church on sundays). i have carried all the insurance benefits, for years now, and have not received a dime from him because i can't afford to finalize this divorce. i am so frustrated. can anyone give me info that would help?? thanks

More info: I have some federal bills in my name only, and because of them do not want to put my name on a return, because if I was filing, my refund would be garnished for them. My husband made the money, we had a really tough year since I lost my dad, and support my mom along with my family. I'd like my husband to file and the refund to go to him, but it says if you are married filing jointly, to put both names and it says the same thing if you file married, filing separately. Can they garnish if we file separately, and my name is on there? If so, any idea how he could file without my name on there? I wasn't sure if he could file head of household, especially since we have always filed jointly (although he'd qualify). We live in California. Thanks for any help.

My husband and I have been seperated for 1year. I have our two children. A tax advisor said I can file HoH and get EIC. This really scares me. What if I file this way and the IRS wants proof. I don't have proof that we are seperated. We have nothing thru the courts. All the bills and the mortgage are still in both our names. We do not have a savings/checking together any more. He pays the morgage in the place of child support. We were seperated last tax season but because it had not been six months we had to file together. AND it looks as if we might get back together now. If I file HoH this year and MFJ next year, will that raise red flags? I could really use all the refund that the tax advisor is saying I can get. I realize it would be easier just to file MFJ this year, but like I said if I can get that extra money, it would really help. Any advise.
