My wife worked for most of the year trying to start her own business. She was paid mostly in cash, but kept records of everything. After we totaled everything up, her start-up expenses were more than her income so she actually never "made" any money, ie. profitable income. Does she have to report all this or what should she do?

I have a question, while claiming for the refund from IRS, she need to attach a letter from her ex-employer stating refusal of refunding taxes. What should be the reason for refusal by employer? Is there any particular formate for the letter? Does the letter have to be on Company's letter head?

I have an obscene amount of capital loss carried over over the years, which will probably take my whole life time to offset with any future capital gains, and yet every year I still pay taxes on my interest incomes. Is there anything I can do better?

I recently got married to a Spanish women. We have all but a few documents gather ready to file for an adjusted statues so she can get her green card and SSN. The problem I am having is how to file my taxes? She is not eligible for a ITIN # and there is no way to get a SSN # before the tax deadline? Should I try filing "married filing separate" and then do an amendment or should I file for an extension in hopes that I can have here SSN # in time?

I have a kinda complicated situation:

I applied for and accepted a summer internship in Washington, DC. However, when I got there I learned my office was at an annex building in Virginia, so I worked mostly in VA, but I often had to work at the main office in DC. I lived in DC. Also, I was paid out of the office in charge of the intern program, which is in DC. My money, however, came from the organization's financial center, which is in South Carolina.

I paid some "state" income taxes, and am probably entitled to get the money back, but how do I find out who took the taxes and who I file with?

My dad recieves a 1099 (he is a contractor), and is unsure if he has to file a 1040, and I have to know because I have to do an appliaction for financial aid (about to go to college), and it asks all kinds of questions about the 1040 form that my dad doesn't think he has to do.

My son works part time in a grocery store. I filled out a 1040ez form but it only asks for federal information. What form would we use to file his state tax? Sounds silly to ask this but I normally don't do taxes.

We already filed and got refund back. Now employer calls and wants SS# to send 1099. Supposed to be mailed by 1/31. Can he legally do that? Here it is going on April.

Can anyone give me some advice, or share their experience with research grants and taxes? I received a grant for about $20,000 to conduct archaeological excavations outside the US. Other grants I have received in the past have been managed by my university but this grant was awarded to me as an individual. I received a 1099-MISC from the granting institution with the grant amount listed in box 7 as self-employment income. I have receipts for everything I spent the grant on (all of it was related to archaeology project, and includes living expenses while abroad, lab analyses, fieldwork expenses, etc.).

I am having trouble understanding how to deduct these research expenses, because I do not run my own "business" (which is what Schedule C is for?).

Should I report the grant as "other income, line 21" and report the research expenses in "job expenses" on Schedule A?

Thanks!

I was ordered by family court to put $35K into a trust fund for my son in 2006. I had to take it from my tax deferred annuity. The money is for secondary education, but if not used for this, still passes to him with trustee approval for its reasonable use. I am on SSDI. Because of this one time court ordered funding, not only the 35K is being taxed, but so is my 2006 SSDI. I used Turbo Tax and owe a lot of taxes(Fed+State). Is there any way this tax due can be spread over years, such as income averaging? Does averaging even still exist in tax law?

How do you think our tax money could better be controled/spent? If you would like to explain why you say yes or no I would appreciate it! If anyone knows where one could go to to see exactly what our percent/tax money we pay the govt is going to please share!

They say they will issue and examination report that will show "additional tax due". I don't have a lot of receipts with me so I will probably end up paying anyway. I already re-scheduled and the lady I spoke with seemed very irritated.

I will try to call again tomorrow to reschedule, but if she has no more openings that comply with my work schedule I won't be able to go. Has anyone had any experiences with this? Serious answers only please. Thanks.
