hi ..I normally have h&r block do my taxes...BUT I am trying to do them on my own this year..I bought their tax software and have a question..

Part of my income comes from land in which I get a coal residual...basically allowing a company to strip mine my land for a royality in exchange..
Now in the past the lady at H&R block took a depreciation of like 10 percent for capital gains..basically taking into account that the coal on the land won't last forever..it is a limited resourse..
the problem comes in the fact that this years revenue wasn't thousands of dollars like in the past but a measily 300 dollars
(H&R block normally charges me around this to do my taxes..lol..hense the reason I am trying to do them myself:>)
when I try to plug this sum into the computer...it comes up weird..like the depreciation is less than the sum??? if this makes sence..
please give me your opinion...

or do they just get a 1099 tax form at the end of the year?
Do they have to pay them in order to title it or insure it?
Let's say you won car, if you decided to sell it to make some easy $$, do you have to pay the taxes on it BEFORE you can even claim it as yours in order to sell the thing?

You see, I have all these plans of winning a car, and I want to sell it. I just want to know what to expect when the day comes....lol.

I am in the process of opening a online call center. I want to hire people to outsource for my clients, but I need to know what forms I would need to use for either to pay them as a independant contractor, or what steps to be w2 for them. Also I am in Pa, do i need a tax id # and an EIN # for a business that I go with the 1099 option?

My deceased father (died in 2006) failed to file gift tax returns for several years reporting gifts that exceeded the annual exclusion amount. I (as POA for my mom) want to file all of those past-due gift tax returns now. Does the IRS charge a late filing fee or penalty, even though there will NOT be any taxes owed?

this is to end an arguement. my step-dad seems to think that you only have to file your taxes if you owe something, he claims if you owe nothing you can file every two years. is there any truth to this? or is he just being dumb?

Who should pay for New York City tax? Only people living in Manhattan or including people who live in Bronx, Queens, etc? And if I only recently moved to NYC and lived in NYC only 3-4 months during 2006, should I be considered NYC resident and pay the city tax? Is there a 180 day threshold or sth like that?
All answers are appreciated!!! Thank you!!!

To be fair, she was having serious problems (jail, drugs) but she probably hasn't filed in 11 or 12 years. she is scared to death to file, but she says she wants to get all this behind her. she 's pretty sure she owes quite a bit of money.

my adjusted gross income (married filing jointly) is more than 112,175. so I need to do the calculation from the worksheet in page 34. when I subtract line 4 from line 3 the number is negative hence the rest of the calculation is negative . doesn't make sense. e.g line 6 - increase it to the next whole number ? it is negative what is the next whole number ? so what should I put as my deduction for exemption ?

I am probably going to be selling my house this year. This has been my primary residence for the past 2.5 years. It will probably sell for around $20k more than I paid for it. I see that the maximum investment income is around $2,800 or less to still qualify for the EIC. I beleive the sale of my home would be considered capital gains and would be included in investement income.
However I know that there are other tax laws that come into play since I've been in my home for 2 of the past 5 years and may not have to pay capital gains on it. Does it make it somehow exempt from being counted as interest income for EIC eligibility?
Please only respond if you really do know what you're talking about! Thanks in advancd!
