I know that business expenses such as advertising can be written off of taxes. What I need to know is what percentage of the expense can be written off? If it is more complex than a approximate percentage, an explanation would be great.

Thanks in advance.

For my sister to qualify as a "qualifiying relative", I meet 3 tests for sure:

1. She is not a qualifiying child
2. She makes less than $3,300 a year
3. I paid for all her expenses

However, there is a gray area in the relationship test.
1. She does not live with me, since she lives on campus at the university, and during the summer break she goes to Mexico to my parent's house for vacation.
2. My parents do not have any U.S. income , they are not U.S. citizens, and they are not "tax payers".
3. Her permanent address is still my parent's address in Mexico.

I understand that the rule says that a person is considered to live with me as a member of my household, if she is away for education or vacation purposes.

Does she still meet this test since she never lives with me during the year, except for a couple of days during small breaks, such as thanksgiving and spring break, etc?

My fiance and I bought a house together in August. We were planning to each declare half of the mortgage interest and property tax but calculated that we would get a bigger tax refund if I declare all of it this year.

This is because while I already owned a home before buying this one, she didn't, and so in her case, four months worth of deductions for the interest and tax are barely more than the standard deduction.

My question is - would it be illegal for me to declare all the interest this year?

Can you claim a loss on a business that has no actual income during the current tax year, if it had income in the previous year. Technically speaking this is not a new business.

From my understanding, when it comes to Federal Income Taxes, one must even claim something as little as cash given for a gift. i.e. Christmases, Birthdays, etc.
While it's true that some people rob the system by making millions and paying a fraction of what they really owe, what about "Joe 6 pack"?
He makes 30k a year at his day job. He also has a part time job that pays him "under the table". Then he takes that money to cover his daughters college tuition.
While technically both are one in the same to the Feds, what do you think?

Thanks!

I relocated to Singapore few months back. So I provided my Singapore Bank's (which is UOB, United Overseas Bank) Account no and the routing no which is of Bank of New York for my Tax refund. Bank of New York is UOB Singapore's Correspondent bank. Well 'Where's my refund' page says it has been deposited on 16th Mar. But I dont see any money in my bank account. I think it has gone to some one else's account as Bank of New York cannot identify UOB Bank because I didn't provide SWIFT code. The tax form has no placeholder for SWIFT code too. Perhaps it has gone to a person who has an account with Bank Of New York and same account number as mine. I made a blunder I think. I could have lost money to some one else. Or does any know what I could do. Please help me.
Thanks
Kat
