I rented a house all of last year and never had a roommate. Does HoH apply? I surely would like it to, as it more than doubled my refund when I checked it

If no one lives with you, it is possible to be able to file as Head of Household if:

1. You maintain a separate home for a dependent parent, or
2. You have a dependent child who is away at school.

But otherwise, no, you cannot file as head of household.

You may file single independent.

To qualify as HoH you must have had a dependent living with you for not less than 6 months of the tax year.

In order to file as HoH you must maintain a home for a dependent who lived with you for more that half of the year. Since you live by yourself, you can't file HoH.

No, you can't - head of household filing status is only available for people providing a home for a dependent, and paying more that half of the cost of providing that home.
