I'm a student doing his taxes for the first time... My main question is what exactly is a write-off? And what can I write off? Can I write off my computer? Do I need receipts? What I mainly don't get about write offs is, are my writeoffs a deduction of what I owe the government so I get more back from what I've paid them from my checks? Or, do I actually recieve money from the government for my expenses? Or are my two questions basically the same question? I'm confused. Any other helpful tips? Should I take my w-2's to a tax place? How much do they cost? Thanks for your help.

I filed my federal return, but the website wouldn't let me file multiple state returns so I couldn't do it. Where can I file a state return for both California and Tennessee?

I have taken care of my 80 year old grandmother for the last 10 years. She makes 2500.00 a month tax exempt income. She receives a veterans pension (tax exempt) social security and a retirment pention for 350.00 and social security is like 1200.00 and her veterans pension is like 900.00 so she does not file taxes because her CPA told her she did not have to because all her income was tax exempt. Now I we pay for some of her care and for her room food and clothes. The rest she uses for her care and deductables on medical bills. So I have never claimed her all these years but someone said I was crazy for not claiming her and I thought she made too much money to claim her so I never did. Until someone said that money is only on taxable income. Is this true. By the sounds of what I said do you think I could claim her?
Thank You in advance for any info

I had $2000 worth of stocks coming into last year. However I lost $2000 that year and I don't own any stocks now. I reveived my 1099 now and it showed I did not make any profit or loss? does that mean I cannot claim the $2000 in losses? I did not get any 1099 last year. I am confused. Thanks

When I left my job in NYC in late 2005, I was paid a severance package which paid me through March 2006. I've been a full time WA state resident for all of 2006 and confused how I should fill out my state taxes.

Can I get the taxes from my NYC income? Even when I wasn't in state when I collected it? Should I expect all NY state/local taxes back?

I know many of you will advise me to wait and then contact the company, but I have a feeling I won't receive it because they are very unorganized and irresponsible. In fact, I only have one legitimate "payroll" check with taxes withheld, and the rest are handwritten business checks with no taxes withheld. I worked there for a total of 2 months and received a total of 5 or 6 checks.

SALLIE MAE IS THE ONLY COMPANY ALLOWED TO TAKE YOUR TAX CHECK AND ALSO ANY SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY THE PERSON GETS. THEY DON'T ANSWER TO ANYONE. THEY REFUSE TO PROCESS YOUR DISABILITY FORMS AND THEN TAKE YOUR CHECKS. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO. THE CONGRESS HAS GAVE THEM CONTROL. THEY DON'T HAVE TO REPORT TO THE DEPT,. OF EDUCATION. AND THEY ARE UNABLE TO HELP. WHY ARE WE ALLOWING THIS?
