1040X (don't forget the state forms too) in CA it's 540X

Don't listen to "truckerkid" - it's easy. You have the original numbers in one column, the corrected numbers in another and then the difference. You must include a copy of the original return marked "as filed" and a copy of the corrected return marked "as amended"

Form 1040-X is used to file amended returns.

You'll also have to file a copy of the corrected with Form 1040-X to show what the return would have looked if it was correct when it should have filed.

In addition, you may have to file an amended state return since the federal change may also affect the state income tax figures. Each state has their own amendment forms but some do not.

The correct form is the 1040X. You can only file this form on paper. You don't need to attach a copy of you full return. Only attach schedules that have changed and any W-2s that were not included with your original return.

have someone do it for you that is the best way unless you know the tax laws ammendments can be tricky
