We are newly married and my wife only earned about 7,000 and I earned 58,000. Also, she recently got a greencard. Since this is a necessity to work are the application fees deductable?

A joint return would be the best bet in nearly all cases, assuming that you were married during 2006 or earlier.

The fees for her Green Card are not deductible. It reflects her eligibility to live in the US; it is not an employer-required business expense.

Joint. With her income significantly less, more than likely you will see all of her taxes paid in throughout 2006, returned to you in refund. She did not make make enough to get an earned income credit, unless she was single for over 6 months out of the year, I believe, and then you got married. Joint is your best bet in my experience and you can claim her as a dependent.

Double check with IRS, but it gets more back for me every time to do joint.

Try both options, file the one with the biggest return.
