When I left my job in NYC in late 2005, I was paid a severance package which paid me through March 2006. I've been a full time WA state resident for all of 2006 and confused how I should fill out my state taxes.

Can I get the taxes from my NYC income? Even when I wasn't in state when I collected it? Should I expect all NY state/local taxes back?

File a non-resident return; usually the state taxes are refunded. I'm not sure how NYC will treat the local taxes. Both state returns should allow you to show where income was earned and tax it accordingly. (By state, usually as a ratio of the total income.)

No, you'll file a non-resident return for NY, listing the income from your severance package paid in 2006. It's a virtual certainty that NY will consider that income to be NY sourced income so there will be no way around that.

I believe that NYC does not tax part-year residents, so you should get that back.
