I live in the UK, and I've found that many things are cheaper if bought from the US, even with the postage charge.

But, then I have to pay import tax.

Why does this tax exist, isn't it blocking free trade?

I have been self employed for some time and do my tax return online. However, I've noticed that some banks and other organisations request your 'books' if you are self employed. Could anyone (in the UK) tell me what such books should look like exactly. Of course, I have a black book listing earnings and outgoings...but should it be more comprehensive than that? Other than keeping receipts and wage slips, and filling in my account online, is there some form of specific hard copy I should be keeping? Many thanks!

She has not bought the big TV and all other fancy things she intends to save it for her pension. She is however on Benefits and if she declares it she will loose it and 40k will not last too long she could go out to work but as she has lost her parents and Sister shortly after she is totally worn out as the family home had to be sold to pay of the Tax man

Q2. Have proof of transfer of assets under a private agreement...inland revenue says this isn't legally binding as wasn't done through high court...is this true? They have sent this url which refers to 'bill of rights' ...our agreement is settlement of debt, not holding ownership unless debt is paid...are they right? http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/recmanual/rec2505.htm

At the time of the sale, we drew up a receipt which details the name of the person doing the selling, the name of the person who bought them, the date of the sale, as well as the description and costs of the goods. Both parties signed the receipt.

However I now need to prove legal ownership as the inland revenue are trying to seize the goods from the person who sold them to me. They claim the receipt is not legal proof that I now own them ? They are suggesting that the sale should have gone through a court ?

Any advice is appreciated.

Hi all,
I recently became self-employed and registered as such with HMRC. What I would like to know now is if there is a definitive list somehwere that shows me what I am allowed to deduct as expenses etc whilst working in the IT field. I have looked at the HMRC documents but it is not clear. Is there a site that I can visit or would I have to pay an accountant before submitting my tax return?
Thank you.
