I've just bought my first car and insured it online, I'm waiting for the documents to come through the post. Is there anyway for me to get it taxed until then?

Thanks

most places let you print them off as you insure

Several people have mentioned the electronic tracking system for insurance and getting your disc on-line at the DVLA website. And one mentioned the ANR system that will keep you safe from the Old Bill. That is true, but only to a point. The DVLA are quite explicit about the fact that you must DISPLAY your tax disc to be legal. You may NOT operate the vehicle on a public road (including parking it threre) without a tax disc on display.

Whilst a police car using the ANR system won't catch you out, a parking warden on foot patrol doesn't have the ANR system and will issue a citation if they see your car on the side of the road without a disc.

Play it safe. Keep it off the public roads until you are fully legal with all documents in hand. That is the ONLY way you can guarantee that you won't be done for no tax disc, etc.

You need insurance covernote & Mot obviously and garage should give you the green slip from the log book V5. Go to post office and you should get tax there and then. If you tax it tomorrow, 31 Oct it will need to be back taxed it 1st Oct so you are loosing a month. Wait til 1st Nov to put on road and tax can start that day. Doing it online takes 5 days for disc to come through in post so you could still technically get a ticket for not displaying a valid ticket. Try to get the garage to do it for you. Should have included that in the deal. Good luck but remember Post Office staff are very particular about details when it come to car tax so every thing will need to be in order!

The best option is to ask the Insurance Company to email you a certificate which you can print off. Some do some don't, but unfortunately without a certificate of motor insurance you can't get tax.

a3human is correct. DVLA links into the insurance & MOT database. Apply online. Once it is all done and paid for you can then drive with impunity, as the Police ANR (automatic number-plate recognition) systems all link to DVLA, so even if you haven't got a tax disc displayed, you will be shown as fully legal.

If you're in the UK

All is done electronically these days.
So even if you don't have the paper work you can apply online for your tax:
http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/?SKIN=directgov

Just call your insurance company and ask them if it's gone thru the system yet.
Once you've done your tax online you can go on the road even if you don't have the disc yet. Because they check it electronically now.

Hope this help, and congrats with the new car, but watch out for the cameras ;o)

you need a valid MOT test certificate for the car and your full insurance documents or the post office will not give you the tax disc.I tried taking the printed off document in myself and they refused to do it,told me i had to wait until i got the full documents through.

if you bought the car from a reputable dealer ,he should not have let you take the car out of the showroom without displaying a current tax disc, so i suggest you go back to the dealer and confront them, good luck

The dealer should have taxed it for you. You can tax it online as long as the document are registered on the national database

I am afraid not.You will need a valid MOT ( if your car is more than three years old ) ,a valid insurance schedule and ,if you need one,a form from the post office ( just ask and they will help you ).
