My husband and I are closing on a home. Should we each change our tax status from Single 1 to Married with 3 allowances? We are not sure how to determine how many allowances we can have. We do not want to end up owing the IRS in April. Should we make an appointment with an accountant to alter our W-4s to be certain?

Hi

I'm working on a temporary xmas contract for a certain huge company. So far I've had two wages off them; and I was emergency taxed on both. After the first tax, I gave my P46 to my manager. This was around 2 or 3 days after my first taxed pay.

I was very annoyed to find I had yet again been emergency taxed at the end of Nov. My assistant manager said the form will have been dealt with, as does my manager (who doesn't remember doing it though).

So...

1. Will I be able to claim back my taxed earnings before April?
2. Any ideas what my next move should be? Should I talk to Payroll/HR, or should I attempt to speak to my local tax office?
3. Would my P46 have been dealt with in wks or is it a long process?

Sorry for the many questions but this is my first job, and frankly I needed that money for xmas... Now I'm waiting on almost £200!

Thanks

We are thinking about transfering my business premesis into a Sipp.
My partner and i bought new premesis 4 years ago for 250k now valued at 350k.
if we sell property to our sipp do we have to pay CGT on the gain or do we pay corporation tax?
if its cgt then do we split the gain between us and can we use our annual cgt allowance against the gain?
so is it scenario a: gain of £100k pay corp tax at 20% tax bill of £20k added to annual bill then income tax of 40% when we take cash out of company - this seems a very unfair way of doing things.
Or is it scenario b;
Gain of £50k per partner reduced to 25% as its a business asset = £12,500 then deduct personal allowance of £9200 leaving a tax charge each of £3,300.

i hope its b.

PS. we have enough in our pensions to fund the purchase of the building into our sipp, we are just very concerned with the proposed increases in CGT through removal of taper relief/indexation.

hi, as i am the only earner in my home me and my partner applied for council tax benefit and rent benefit and was granted it a few months back. one month i had to do three courses for work and was paid overtime for this . they have now stopped my benefit as they say i earn too much. ( they used that payslip to calculate my earnings) i have had a written letter from my employer stating that i was paid extra this particular month and it was not my wage normally. i also took down statements and payslips showing that since that month my pay had returned to its original low amount. they looked at out claim again and still said that the letter proved nothing and was a business expense that i had to meet.( made no sense to me either) we have now appealed but havent any reply for a month. any advice ? i'm not entitled to working tax credit as i'm 23 and have no kids. they also failed to note that since then my rent has increased.. grrrrrrrrr

I am going to be working for a company but they want me to be on a self employed basis. I will have to travel 25 miles per day, in total, to and from the office-am I right in thinking that I will be able to claim 40p per mile on my tax return? I will only be working part time (15 hours a week -3 hours a day) I will be paid £9 per hour..so by my calculations I will need to deduct £50 a week for travel expenses - leaving me with £85 profit. Is this right as it seems that I will probably have no tax to pay as I'm allowed more than this amounts to on my tax code?
