I have read both publications 936 and 530 from the IRS on this. I see where closing costs are included in the basis of the home when you buy it but what about when you refinance? Is it deductible then and if so, where does it go on the tax return?

I need to know if I can qualify for the Hope Or Life Time Learning credits. I have a loan that is deferred and get financial aid from FASFA. Current out of pocket expenses are paper, printer ink, office supplies(ie staplers and such). Does any one know stipulations for these credits.

so my friend and i made around the same money last year and her mom did her taxes and she is supposedly getting around $700 BACK. when i used the H&R calculator, it said i was supposed to get $600 BACK (maybe without saying I am a dependent), but when my mom did my taxes & i did it on Turbotax, it said I am only supposed to get $253 BACK.

do you think it's possible that her mother said that she (my friend) wasn't a dependent, that's why she's getting that much back.

it's the only way i think?

Since my mother died, my father (aged 77) and his two dogs moved in with us. We agreed he would contribute $300 each month towards his keep plus dog food, treats, etc. He is now asking if I am declaring this on my tax return. Is it income? It is costing us much more than $300 a month for him to live with us.

I've been working at a bar for some time now, everything I make, I make in tips. Nothing is recorded and I dont have a regular wage.

Sometimes the tips vary but either way it pays the bills.

I started a savings account about the same time I started the job. I recieved a statement from the bank saying I gained $50 in interest.

Im told I must file this as income with the tax people... but I dont want to pay and arm and a leg to state what I gained in interest for my savings... its so small!

I've also been told because I work at a bar for tips alone, I dont need to file. Kind of like antique dealers, or people who do yard services.

Any advice on this?

My friend lived (and worked) in Florida, then moved to Virginia where he became employed and earned money there as well.

He's coming back to Florida on vacation and plans to do his taxes while here in Florida.

Can he kill 2 birds with 1 stone and do his Virginia taxes here in Florida as well? Or does he have to do the taxes separately in each state?

He plans to do it in H&R Block but isn't sure if a tax preparer can prepare taxes for moneys earned in another state.

Hello all..

I used turbo tax to do my tax returns for 2006. My perm address is in MD but I worked in DC over the summer and worked in CT while I was at school. After finishing my returns, it shows that I receive a refund from DC but I owe MD money. Do I need to file a MD return even though I didn't work in MD?
