so my friend and i made around the same money last year and her mom did her taxes and she is supposedly getting around $700 BACK. when i used the H&R calculator, it said i was supposed to get $600 BACK (maybe without saying I am a dependent), but when my mom did my taxes & i did it on Turbotax, it said I am only supposed to get $253 BACK.

do you think it's possible that her mother said that she (my friend) wasn't a dependent, that's why she's getting that much back.

it's the only way i think?

Please do not compare the size of your refund to anyone else's and draw any conclusions from it. It's like comparing the taste of an orange to the size of a sneaker -- it's totally meaningless.

Your friend got the refund that she got because her withholdings exceeded her tax liability by $700.

You got your refund because your liability was $253 less than your withhodlings.

Your friend may well have been claimed as a dependent by her mother but she had $450 more in taxes withheld from her pay than you had from yours. Or maybe her mother screwed up and filed her taxes wrong. There's no way for you to know, and it's not your concern anyway.

You probably are right. Your friend's mother probably ignored the tax instructions in reference to exemptions. They should either amend your friend's return(Form 1040X) or not claim her as a dependent on their return. That is why IRS asks the social security no. of dependents. See the reference below for the official instructions.

If both returns claim your friend as a dependent, they will get a notice from IRS sometime in the future.

BTW, I am a CPA.

It's possible. There is no way to know with out looking at both returns. Her tax situation is different than yours.

It is not wise to compare returns because each tax situation is unique. There may be issues affecting your return that do not affect your friends.
