You need to file just to get what they withheld back, unless you like giving the government money.

If you made less than $8450, you do not need to file. However, I'm assuming that your employer withheld federal and state taxes, which you would get back if you file.

Whether working on the books or not, if you worked you must file. Now you may not have to file NYS paperwork in the traditional sense, but you may have to send in an exemption form. Go to irs.gov or call them up and ASK them.

Yes you do and you will also be able to get back most of your taxes you paid. Check your W2
