Every bleeding heart liberal I've ever some accross has always told me that rich people should be taxed a higher percentage of their income because they need to pay their "fair share." What is a fair share? If the income tax system taxed everyone 15% of their income, would the rich be paying less than the poor? if the poor paid a higher percentage of taxes than the rich, wouldn't there be a public outcry? then why is there none when some of the extremely rich in America pay close to half of their incomes in taxes? Again, if you're going to rely on arguments that call upon emotions or feelings, don't bother to post. I want good, solid, fact-based and logical arguments. No rants.

Went to HRBlock for 2006 taxes. They made an error and said I didn't have to pay taxes on an early IRA disbursement.(YIKES) I had them review it, and different "tax-pro" admitted the error. They say I have to wait until IRS finds the mistake & sends me a letter; or finds it & fixes it & sends me a letter; or completes my return w/out finding the error. Shouldn't we send in an amended form NOW instead of waiting?? They have me getting a large refund, which is wrong. Now my CT state return is wrong, and so are my kids' FAFSA's. I think HRBlock also made a mistake using the HOPE Credit, and on one of my deductions.

I was helping my parents doing their tax return. They are getting a small refund from Federal, but nothing is owe or due on state. Do they still have to file the state? The state is Arizona by the way and they just moved there last year. Thanks :)

does a person who writes checks to the order of "cash" (instead of the name of the other person) have to report to the IRS about how much they spend or who they are paying? is it against the law to have checks written for "cash"? if someone writes you a check (small amount of money) and you don't declare it, is it traceable?

I called my last jobs accountant today and was told I got a 1099-MISC form for $550 which represents bonuses. I never recieved bonuses for this amount. I did do teaching in the jewelry store and made and sold pieces to the store - but was always paid from the owner on business checks. I assumed I was paid as an employee but now they are implying I was an independent contractor - which isnt true. I did all the work in the store and never invoiced for anything. What do you think is happening here and what should I do?

I have asked this question before and received varying answers. Here is my Situation:
I lived in VA and had a VA job.Last Sept I got married and moved in with my Spouse who has always been a MD resident and has a MD job. Once I moved my job took notice of my change of adress change and deducted MD taxes.
I have a question about the state filing. I know that for Federal we can file jointly: no problem.
How do we file state? I have tried to file MD married joinlty part year resident and that form is fine.
What about my VA filing? When I try to file a part year married jointly for VA they want to know the dates that I lived in the state and the dates my spouse lived in VA, which is never. Do I leave that question blank? Or,Do we do MFJ for MD part yearand I do MFS VA part year Or,
should MY SPOUSE just do MFS MD and MYSELF do MFS MD **and** MFS VA?? Is that allowed? Please answer only if u know..I cant afford proffesional I'm tryin 2 do this myself. Thanks questions? sati021@yahoo.

We (my siblings and I) recently discovered that my father has not filed his income tax return in nearly 8 years. He sold a piece of property that year and so it was not so cut and dry and he just has not been able to see to do it and has been reluctant to ask for help in doing it.

My sister has collected all the information he has however their are a few years which he did not have his W2's .

Do you know what the best method to resolve this for him would be...he may have money coming to him...or he may owe..we don't know.

How do we go about getting a W2 for him...the company he worked for no longer has them on file as it has been too long ago.

Should we hire an accountant to resolve this or maybe a tax attorney. He is worried to pieces about it and apparently has been worried for some time now and has not told anyone as he did not want to burden us with it.

Any help you can give on what steps we should take to resolve this with the best outcome would be appreciated!

I worked in Illinois, but on my W-2 form the address of my workplace is in Florida!! This is apparently the headquarters, but does this now mean that I owe taxes to Illinois? When I tried to file online it shows I DO owe money to my state! But this can't be right... I must have payed taxes to my state, because there's a number in #15, 16, and 17 which is the state of IL, my Employer's state ID # and the state income tax. If you could help me out, I would be greatly appreciative. :)
