Since becoming a freelance writer three years ago, I have had issues with the yearly taxes. The first year, I paid the estimated tax payments using my S.S. number. End of the year, I filed joint with my husband and there was a delay because I'd filed tax payments under my SS # and not his. The woman at IRS told us we had to pay under both names so that they were linked. I did that and last year ran into the same problem. We were told that it was a glitch in the system that would be fixed.
I just got the notice today that our refund has been delayed yet again because the computer system is not recognizing the estimated tax payments as being linked to my husband - it only links it to me. It was suggested that maybe I just have all my freelance income sent to my husband and only use his SS # in the future. I just don't get it. I know others must successfully work from home doing freelance work, pay their estimated taxes, and then file joint/married. So how do you do it?
